I was discussing which ramen to get with the waiter. I made it clear I didn't want a brothless one. I chose one with broth. A brothless ramen came. I made it clear i did not want this ramen but nothing was done to correct it. I wasn't good.

Veggie tanmen (hot and sour style) was hands down one of the best noodle soups I've ever had! The unpasteurized sake was also tasty. We came for lunch before a visit to the art museum and sat in the Japanese style booths - restaurant was nice and quiet and the service was great.

Great to be back at Shigezo - coming out of the pandemic, the menu isn’t as large as before and hopefully the vibe of an Izakaya will be back! Very honest and transparent about their limited staff during these time. The staff was very friendly and attentive and the dishes were delicious and obviously time and effort put into them. Very relaxing evening and reminiscent of visits to Japan!

Came for Saturday lunch and the place was so packed that we had a 30min wait time. There are no online reservations so you have to show up in person to put down your name/cell. Their hours are a bit misleading as their lunch hours close up at 3pm and reopen later for dinner at 6pm.We used the idle time to visit the Portland Art Museum around the corner. We were called back on time. There were different types of seating available. We were seated by the front windows where you take your shoes off but you sit on a chair with no legs, but you can bend your legs under the table, but it's still short so maybe uncomfortable if you are taller than 5.5ft ?For an izakaya place, the menu had limited savory snack foods that go well with alcoholic drinks compared to the larger variety in the other menu categories. This was perfectly fine since we were hungry and looking for normal sized portions like their noodle and rice dishes. We went with their special garlic ramen bowl (Kumamoto Ramen) and the broth-less ramen bowl (Shio-Abu ramen). Both were satisfyingly good and would recommend. Neither of these came with bamboo shoots so I'll have to remember to read the menu closely and ask to add it next time.Due to the pandemic, they're very understaffed so don't expect too much customer service. It's suggested to put in your entire order at once as there will be a long wait time if you add additional orders later. If you are short on time, you will need to flag down a waiter asap to get their attention.

One of my favorite Japanese restaurants in town. They have a lot of fun seating options that make for a fun date night or small group of friends. They have 2 very different bar areas that are perfect for a party of one. Quell eggs and bacon are the perfect starter & set the tone for the rich flavors in the sushi and entrées. A bit pricy, but well worth it. So treat yourself! It gets busy on the weekends & service can suffer, so if you are impatient like me, you might want to go during the week.

A beautiful restaurant with traditional seating or modern tables. If you choose the traditional seats you get a raised platform to take off your shoes and store them. You get a floor seat that is on a small ledge so you still get a bit of a room to let your legs hang without having to cross them fully. The food is delicious and is wonderfully complimented by the atmosphere. When I went it was a one man kitchen staff so be prepared for a wait if you don't arrive right at opening of the dinner time. Also be sure to give the drum a couple of bangs for good luck on the way in or out.

Food was amazing!! It was very traditional. There was only one chef making all the food, the quality was worth the wait! Atmosphere was nice. Don't forget to bang the drum for good luck.

The hubby and I celebrated our anniversary of 28 years at Shigezo Izakaya. The sushi, atmosphere and service was excellent!! We will be back!!

Amazing and authentic Japanese cuisine. Brought back fond memories from my time living in Japan. There may be a wait, but it's worth every second. Perhaps the best taco-yaki I've ever had!

Visiting Portland from Minnesota and was craving Japanese food. I have to say this hit the spot. It was about an hour wait to be seated, they took my number and called me when a table had opened up. I will also say it was worth the wait, if you have to time to kill wait. Once seated server was polite and friendly. A note that you do have to remove your shoes for some of the seating sections. I ordered the chicken katsu curry and a glass of otokoyama sake. It was the first time that I had chicken katsu in bite size pieces, it was delicious. The curry had a good consistency and there was an adequate amount. I also ordered the black sesame mochi which was good. I would definitely recommend this place for almost any occasion and it is fairly priced.
