The pork buns and the best I’ve had in multiple different states. The fried dumplings caused my wife to fight me. Order the large size you won’t be disappointed.
Saw all the rave reviews so I had to give this a try. I ordered the steamed pork buns and shao mai steamed dumplings. One word...mush. I have no idea how it got all the 5 star reviews. It was all blob of indiscernible flavor. The wrappers were cardboardy and chewy. it was one the worst dumplings I have ever had. Maybe I should have ordered the fried dumplings but I wasn't in the mood for anything greasy. There were some pros in the form of very fast service and generous portions.
Oh my GOD!!!! It's sooooo good!! I went there for my first dumpling week stop, and I was immediately hooked! The chef is clearly from Hong Kong, and from dough to filling to cooking techniques, all follow the traditional ways. So it tastes just like home! Perfect, perfect, perfect! So far I've went back 5 different times already and ordered the same things every time. And, each time, equally mind-blowing! A must-go stop for Asian food in Portland!!!!
I didn’t want them to end. Amazing dumplings and steamed buns. Worth the wait.
Braised Pork Belly with rice from Shanghai’s Best In Pine St. Market and a Hammer & Stitch IPA
Loved the kind couple's approach to simple but well done food. Not a large menu, but what they do, they do well.
We came during Dumpling Week PDX, and the line was immense for this little stall within Pine Street Market. It is a family owned and ran business, a husband and wife. It was worth every second of the 1 hour wait. The husband was so nice taking orders and frying the dumplings while the wife was furiously making the dumplings fresh by hand. We ordered the pan fried chicken dumplings (煎餃 or 鍋貼) and the braised pork belly rice (resembling 紅燒肉) and it was one of the best we've ever had. The dumplings are perfectly crispy on the bottom and juicy on the inside, while the wrappers are soft and flavorful. The pork belly melts in your mouth and the sauce coats the rice in umami. Be sure to ask for their secret hot chili oil sauce (super spicy)! Plenty of shared seating indoors with Pleasure Burger (which also smacks). Will come back to support them again and try everything else on the menu!
The dumplings were really good: the dough was not too thin nor too thick and they were really fresh. Everything was handmade on the premises. Flavors were perfect and even my 6 and 9 yo kids loved the dumplings and moon cakes.
Bought a bunch of the pork and vegi ones for a new years party (about 70 of them). Thought I would have enough left over the next day, all of them were devoured by end of night. Everyone that had them said it was the best dumplings they ever had.Personal perspective, I grew up in China and these are the legit Jian Bao just like the ones that are sold for breakfast in China's Street vendors. If you like dumpling and bao, go to Shanghai's best and get some yummies.
Best dumplings I have ever had. Made by owner super nice guy from Shanghai
