We ordered their "spicy" dry fried chicken And it wasn't really dry fried. It was deep fried with a sweet sauce definitely more in the culinary family of Cantonese orange chicken with syrupy sauce than it is with anything that is really Sichuan nothing in this restaurant was legitimately zingy or spicy. So if you're looking for a cut above the typical Cantonese American restaurant food and maybe you are a vegan or vegetarian who wants more soy options on the menu than usual then this is your place . If you're looking for anything more off the beaten path or gourmet authentic China you should probably look elsewhere .
we arrived 45min before close for dinner and were seated promptly with no fuss. we ordered the pot stickers, pork belly fried rice, and the mongolian soy curls. everything was excellent! the pot stickers were some of the best I’ve ever had - obviously home made and HUGE - full of flavor. the pork belly fried rice was my favorite, rice was light and tasty - not too salty - and the pork belly was plentiful and delicious. soy curls were a new experience for me, but they were full of flavor (mongolian sauce aplenty) and decently spicy. love the texture of the soy curls vs tofu… a bit more firm but still carry the flavor of the sauce quite well.portions were great for the price (we took about half of what we ordered home to be enjoyed the next day )restaurant is moderately sized - 10 to 15 tables, no outdoor seating that i could seeservice was very fast - we were in and out in 45min or so.menu is excellent - tons of veggie/vegan options. lots of great home made options (noodles/pot stickers/etc)would definitely recommend!
I went here with my wife for a date night out. I heard their vegan options were great and that wasn’t the case. Be ready to choose between a dish with all tofu or a dish with all veggies. The variety was minuscule in that aspect. The service was unfortunately really bad. It took at least 25mins for our order to be taken and the server didn’t care at all about us or even saying a word. Seriously. Completely silent. We were really excited and I was ready for a five star night out. But I will continue my quest for good vegan Chinese food!
Shandong is a cute little restaurant in the Hollywood District of Portland. The first thing to know is parking is difficult here. The little parking lot next to the restaurant is for the community center, so be prepared to hunt for a space like it's a Playstation 5 or and Xbox Series X. The menu has plenty of choices, and the food ranges from "Hey, that's really good," to, "Well...I shouldn't have ordered that." The potstickers were huge and very tasty, but the fried wontons were small and, though crisp, were missing the large fillings the potstickers had. My order of "Beef and Broccoli" was good and plentiful, but the Chow Mein tasted more of pepper than anything, and the lemon chicken wasn't very lemony. Our party of six left almost three full plates of food on the table because the taste wasn't great. That said, the appetizers and the fried rice were very good and very well done. One member of our party was unable to come, and the restaurant prepared a vegetarian version of their fried rice for him at no extra cost. If you're in the Hollywood District and looking for Chinese food, Shandong is the way to go.
It has been a few years since I eaten at Shandong. I was pleasantly surprised that the restaurant was as good as I remembered it. Prices are still reasonable and service is decent. Both the pork belly fried rice and the chicken noodle soup were delicious. The fried rice had a decent amount of pork fried with a few veggies and a bit of egg. The .noodle soup was filled with home made noodles and had shitake caps , chicken and a few veggies in it as well. We ended up taking about half of the portion home.Recommended
I have always had a good experience here. They have a good vegan section on the menu. Mt favorite is the soy curl potstickers and curry soy curl noodles. They give you a TON of food so I always have leftovers :) it's not overly greasy like some Chinese food spots. The veggie dishes can be a little overly salty for my personal taste, that would be my only complaint but again it's just a personal preference.
Recently had the worst experience ever at Shandong. We go to Shandong every year on Christmas or Christmas Eve. This year we made a reservation at 6:30. When we got to the restaurant there were an overwhelming number of people in the front area waiting for takeout. This is a Covid nightmare. It was absolute chaos. We finally got someone to take our order about 15 minutes after sitting down. Our appetizer came another 15 minutes later and it was wrong. And then we sat and waited, Then ask the server again about our food. And we waited and again asked our server about our food and waited. Meanwhile the chaos at the front counter continued while tables around us intermittently got food. We asked them one more time where our food was and the server indicated that it would be coming soon. Our food never came. After an hour and a half we finally left. At this point it was Christmas Eve at 8 o'clock at night and there was pretty much nowhere else to eat. We went home. We have never had this kind of experience at Shandong and can only chalk it up to the fact that Henry sold it last year. We will never go back.
went here Christmas night, they were PACKED. navigating online orders, call ins, takeout, and diners, totally swamped. I got an online order and the food was excellent and no mistakes. unbelievable given how busy they were, really impressive.
My absolute, most favorite place. Even though there are new owners and they were waiting on the liquor license- the food is still spectacular. Please try the hot mustard. You're welcome!
If you enjoy seasoned, full flavor food this is not the place for you. Super bland and under seasoned. My beef was chewy, and watery. My partners noodles had zero flavor or seasoning. On top of that, it’s not affordable. I never leave reviews, but wow this place did not deliver.
