A wonderful Barvarian restaurant that has been a landmark in Multnomah for years. The food is good hearty German fare served in a cozy atmosphere with friendly service. This is a great stop for lunch or dinner.
This place was so charming and delicious. The server was by herself, but provided fabulous service. She was friendly and knowledgeable and very efficient.Their famous dill pickle soup is absolutely delicious and so deserving of the title. Everything else, from the bread to the schnitzel and spatzle were delicious. We left with some tasty pastries and will definitely come back.
My step father is from Germany and my son is a chef in Seattle. My son heard abt this place thru the chef grapevine and took us. Unbelievably my step dad had not heard abt this place. He was impressed and loved it, which if you know a German, you know is no easy feat. The ambiance was fabulous. A small party room seating abt 25-30 I'd guess. A dozen tables in main dining area seating 2-10ish. The food, off the chart good!! The owner served everyone, it was full on a Tues night. We did NOT lack for attention. There were 5 specials and 3 were not on the menu. The eleven or so, year old dautr was hostess under Dad's watchful eye. She chatted with us during or 10 minute wait, with such ease. She was super delightful as she said, "follow me please."They offer 'to go' desserts at a low cost also. The dinners were abt $25 ish per person range. Mmm, chocolate rum cake and flan. MAKE RESERVATIONS. We did not but will next time. You really need to go here!! This is a true family run, family dining experience.
Great food and atmosphere! Waitress was only server working but more attentive and efficient than most restaurants with full wait staff. Very good. Very satisfied. Will definitely come here again and again.
The description says old school, but this little gem is OLD SCHOOL like you time traveled 30-years back to Portland in the '90s. Set your expectations accordingly and you won't be disappointed. The quaint dinning room boasts Lions Club and Key Club plaques and hand-painted German countrysides. The dining is paper-napkin casual with excellent service.First out was superb sourdough brotchen rolls with butter in a basket lined with a coffee filter. Then, an amazing, surprising, delicious creamy dill pickle soup reminiscent of the Moosewood Cookbook/Old Wives Tales Hungarian Mushroom soup if you subbed out grated pickles for mushrooms. This is a must try, it's simultaneously rich and creamy but bright. The salad was little clear plates of pre-assembled simple salad with lettuce, a few cherry tomatoes, pickled onion, packaged croutons and a plastic monkey dish of store-bought dressing. Then came the schnitzel entrees. Each with cooked carrots, cooked spinach, yummy spätzle and several pork tenderloin schnitzels. My daughter's Kaiserschnitzel came with an amazing caper-cream sauce, my wife's Rhamschnitzel with a delicious brandy-mushroom cream sauce and my Jagerschnitzel with a disappointing beef mushroom sauce that tasted like packaged brown gravy mix. Don't get me wrong, I ate every bite. All the meat was perfectly cooked.I considered being disappointed in the narrow beer offerings from a spoiled nouveau-Portland perspective, but in fairness, they offered some 4 superb German beers on draft and another four in bottles. We were very happy with our beers.I've tried to be honest here. We had a great time and would return. I'm excited to try my hand at making a pickle soup. I'd avoid the jager next time and try something else. They had to close during Covid and are making a new go of it with the chef (Anita's) newly replaced hip. We were treated like family and this place was fun and delicious.
Just such a special place to go for lunch ... and for some goodies to take home. Very delicious food at a reasonable price for lunch. Cute and quaint German restaurant.
Their servers are attentive and personable and the food is delicious.
Loved the food. Loved our server. There isn't much else to say here. My husband loved the dill pickle soup. We devoured the black forest cake. We are definitely coming back.
Outstanding German food by a real native German couple family run business! The food is terrific!! The stuffed salmon with spatzel is on point! Best spatzel ive had since I was in Germany!! Well worth the wait and little reservation window!!
Fantastic food and service is fast with just one waitress! The Schnitzel is amazing and I highly recommend the Black Forest cake! It’s a very small and welcoming place.
