This is the real deal. Straight forward, fresh, recognizable sushi. This place doesn't have weird, exotic, overly fancy, "gourmet" stuff. Instead the focus here is really good simple sushi. Food doesn't need to be complicated when made well. Kashi creates excellent sushi with good prices. The interior is plain and unassuming. Previously Sushi Takahashi is in a new location with a new name, Kashiwagi. I was so sad when the old location closed and now so glad I rediscovered it.Though it is farther from where I live, we are guaranteed to go back regularly.

I love going here. The nigiri is so good, so fresh and full of flavor. The shrimp tempura is so fresh and the breading is so light, the shrimp dominates the flavor. This is how Japanese food should taste. A rare treat in Portland

Sure it’s not on the level of Yama or Bamboo, but this isn’t a basic bento/sushi bar either. Don’t knock it because it’s a casual sushi joint next to a Plaid Pantry. That is what makes it so attractive to me. It’s straight up good fish and friendly service.

As longtime Takahashi lovers we were excited to order takeout from this place - we ordered deluxe chirashi bowls, several rolls, and kara age, and we were shocked that they could prepare so much sushi in just 15 minutes. Unfortunately, the fish and rice were not fresh at all. I assume the chirashi bowls had been sitting in a cooler premade, making this basically grocery store sushi. Everything had a very strong off smell, and for the first time in my life I threw an entire meal in the compost. I'm so disappointed (and hungry!) - an expensive mistake that I hope other people won't have to make. On the bright side, the fried chicken was tasty.

Excellent service, food, and atmosphere. It was so refreshing to not have the typical pop radio playing! The agedashi was really crispy & creamy with such a flavorful sauce. The karaage was hot and tasty. The nigiri was on point (and I'm a tough critic). We were waiting for them to open on a Friday evening and were the only ones there for a bit. The online orders were pouring in and the wait time was quickly up to an hour for the first walk-ins after us. I was happy they were so busy, but plan accordingly by showing up first or ordering ahead.

It's exactly what you would expect from a standard mom and pop hole in the wall sushi joint; it's basically the Japanese equivalent of a greasy spoon. Decent fish - not the freshest but good - and good sized portions at a decent price.Service was good despite limited English skills and we got our orders quickly.Ambience and decor aren't great unless you're into the grungy run down look, but nothing awful.

The best sushi rice in town. And the fish is pretty dam good too. Family run business forced to move cause their building was torn down next to Dunaway Park in SW. Used to be Sushi Takahashi 2. Sushi, sashimi, bento, and great tunes. Kashi knows his music, and his fish.

Sushi is very good and fresh

I have been eating at Kashis for almost 20 years now. He is the best. His eclectic taste in music is evident in the obscure yet swinging music of many genres. His food is carefully prepared and delicious. I stopped telling him he needs to raise his prices. Its a family operation and I count him as a good friend and his place a treasure. Order ahead on the phone if you cant wait. His old spot had a train, alas no more so a wait is to be expected.Highly recommend. Hidden gem.
