Limited menu. Nice preparation. Minimal substitutions allowed. Essentially no vegetables. Very nice staff.
The bartender creates specialty drinks that are truly unusualâ¦.the bar also has a great atmosphere. Our dinner was superlative with multiple courses that had to be shared since they were that good. They also have a varied wine menu; we were very pleased with our suggested wine bottle.
As always the service and food were exceptional. We had the Cod and Duck. So very delicious. It has been awhile since we have visited. So glad we decided to go. Thank you Alchemy staff for a really great evening.
Just had dinner here with friends and a couple of local wine makers. Everyone loved their meals. We did some sharing of appetizers with seared scallops, tuna carpaccio, , mushroom dish, and foie gras. The group was solidly split between which was the favorite, but I think the foie gras and the mushroom are the winners. I had the osso bucco, which is so decadent I'm surprised it hasn't been made illegal. My friend next to me had the cod and let me try some, which oh my god was it delicious. The absolute foil to the osso bucco, it was light and delicate and stunningly good. The rest of the table had duck and scallops, which were given eager thumbs ups. Oh! I totally forgot that all the cocktails we ordered to start with were super good. A few of the table had them just make a dealer's choice for us, and the stuff they came up with was so cool! The meal was a splurge, but that is what I expect when I visit a nice restaurant, and in my opinion, worth absolute every cent and more. We finished the meal with a lemon tart that might have just been the best thing of the whole time at the restaurant and perfectly paired with one of the sauternes they had on their list. From top to bottom the meal and service were amazing. My only complaint was that it was hot inside, but it was 110 outside, so I'm not surprised. Even so, they'd set up fans around us to offer some relief as I figure their AC was struggling in an old building like that. I can't wait to be back, and thank you to the chef and staff that made the evening so memorable.
Fantastic place. Weâll worth it. Weâll be back.
I've dined at Alchemy 3 times total. It is in Ashland Oregon, where I visit a couple times a year. In my experience, it has the most sophisticated menu in Ashland, items one doesn't typically find on an upscale menu: steak tartar, octopus, duck confit, foie gras ( I live in California, so this is a special treat). As a solo diner, I was seated typically at a less desireable table close to the hostess stand. If you plan to walk to the restaurant from your downtown hotel and have any mobility troubles, it is located at the top of a short, but very steep hill I would happily dine here again. Fantastic! Excellent service, phenomenal menu, moves us through our courses with care but not rushed so we could make our play.
For $42, I expected amazing fish. Or at least really good. Nope. A chunk of pretty salty cod on a tiny bed of quinoa (they said it had capers, but I didn't see any) with one - yes, ONE - small, almost raw "Hasselback" potato (it was thinly sliced, but otherwise nothing like that preparation suggests). No vegetables with it, either. At least the fish wasn't overcooked, and the sauce wasn't bad. My dining partner enjoyed his duck (though skimpy on veg), and I enjoyed my mushroom starter, but my main was just too disappointing, especially for the price. (No vegetables and no option to order any?!?). The service was also lackluster. Despite allowing two hours before our show (as recommended on their website), we waited a LONG time for a server to come to our table. At that point, we mentioned that we had theater tickets, but despite that, service was bad the whole meal. It took ages for him to come tell us that he couldn't find the wine we ordered (well after our starters had arrived), then he hovered as we discussed another selection - but couldn't answer questions about the wines, and didn't know which they actually had. (Do they have a sommelier?) They were also out of the dessert we ordered, which isn't a crime, but it took 20 minutes for him to come back to tell us. At that point, we were running so late that we didn't have time to order something else. (Luckily, due to the heat, our show's start time had been moved 30 minutes later, so we actually had 2 1/2 hours; otherwise, we wouldn't have been able to even finish our mains!). So, while there were some high points, and our server was pleasant enough when he was actually there, the meal experience wasn't worth the high prices.
Great service and ambiance. Food very flavorful and tasty. Portions and price not so much. Seriously: two tiny scallops for $27? And a really small unrecognizable Cesar salad. Yikes. Bar is cool with lots of choices and great bartenders. However again prices for portions are pretty meager. Overall a good experience.
I was hopeful as they hired a new chef, but my meal was bad. I wonât be returning. Major bummer.
