We (2 couples) who dine out at a wide variety of Dayton upscale restaurants have been to The Roost at least 5 times in the last year….it was that good. This time, we were disappointed. Their best dish used to be the Mussels di Finocchio, which is an appetizer. It wasn’t as good….maybe they changed the recipe, maybe the chef cut back on the cream sauce, but it was sub par. The other dishes, mushroom scallops, market fish (salmon) tosconna were fabulous; the filet was under-cooked (ordered med; came out very medium rare) with too salty Boursin mashed potatoes, and the linguine pesto was not impressive. We all passed on average dessert selections and left wondering if we will go back. The one highlight was the service….Evelyn was amazing, other staff assisted as needed, and the hostess exceeded expectations with a crucial accommodation. This was the place we expected and received quality food and why we returned. The Chef needs to return to his/her A-game….until, then The Roost will be a tough choice to return.

Outstanding dinner. Lovely spot and really good food. Scallops were outstanding - perfectly done. Filet was also cooked exactly right and paired with a simple and flavorful Boursin mashed potato. Well planned wine menu made the meal all the better. And the service was attentive without being overbearing. Best meal I had in Dayton all weekend.
I've been to Roost a couple of times and usually when I go here, the food I get is a hit. However, I went last night and I got the main entrée scallops and they were....ok! It wasn't bad, but it didn't have that usual "This is amazing, I wish I could eat this everyday" kind of feeling that I usually get when I come here. other than that, service was great, the bartender that served me was great, and they even let me eat at one of their appetizer tables since I was dining alone.
I was looking for good food while traveling to Daton. Based on a recomendation I think I found the best resturant in the area. The bartender Michael was great, explained all the Items on the menu and got me out of my comfort zone. I just wish I could have tried everything on the menu. If your on travel and you want fresh made to order food you have to try this place out. Incredible.
This was a lovely place… the food was amazing!
The food is very basic and bland. The ragu was microwaved, all of our food was cold and was served 10 minutes after ordering. Will not be returning and will tell other to avoid the disappointment. Very cheap seating and scenery.
I visited for restaurant week, and everything was wonderful!I'll be back to check out the regular menu soon!
We ate at Roost for a weekend dinner, and I kept asking myself why we have never eaten here before. The food, service, and ambiance is fantastic. There are so many points that distinguish Roost Modern Italian from other Dayton restaurants. This includes the little touches like the lavender herbal hand soak and towel prior to dining. The ability to purchase wine by the carafe instead of merely by the glass or bottle, and the selections are extremely good. The ambiance is quiet with light background music, which is comforting from the many loud dining experiences of so many of the better restaurants. My dining partner chose to order from the Restaurant Week specials. I selected a salad and entree from the regular menu. The carpaccio salad was fresh and inventive. The presentation was a huge part of the appeal as it was different from the standard "wedge" salads offered by so many restaurants. For my main entree, I had the chicken with potato gnocchi. The chicken was tender and juicy. The accompanying mushrooms and artichokes were flavorful. For dessert, we shared the rich chocolate cake from the Restaurant Week order. The dinner was topped off with complimentary Limoncello shots. My only gripe is there's no cappuccino offering.
My absolute FAV place to eat in the Oregon District. They make filet like no one else, the cheese board is to die for and the drinks and desserts are amazing. The staff are always friendly and make for a great evening!
