First time trying the Canton Chinese Restaurant. Their Google review rating was good so I figured it was worth a try. They have a nice website with an online menu which is a plus, there were items on the menu that seemed a little more traditional than most American Chinese Restaurants. The person at the counter was really nice and answered some of the questions I had about some of the items on the menu. I was pretty excited about the restaurant because of the menu and the website. The reason for the 3 stars is because the food was just ok, but not something I would say, I can't wait to eat there again. I tried multiple appetizers and a few main dishes. I have to say, I was surprised to see Chinese BBQ Pork on the menu, so I had to try it. The seasoning (BBQ Sauce/Marinade) was good but the pork was too lean so it missed the mark. The egg roles were not good at all. The dumplings were standard commercial frozen type anyone could by at the market. Anyway, I asked for spicy and nothing was spicy at all. I even asked about the spicy level before ordering and asked for spicy. The food just wasn't that good.
Noticed the high reviews and wanted to try this place! Stopped yesterday and ordered Szechuan Beef and 2 egg rolls. It didn't disappoint! Food was fresh and delicious. Was impressed the put the rice in a different container so there was plenty Szechuan Beef to enjoy! Parking lot was a little crowded but manageable. (The U-Haul place next door were using most the parking spots). Restaurant was clean with a 100% sanitation rating. Staff very friendly. Already looking forward to eating here again!
Let's start with the 100.0 sanitation rating. This place is clean. The husband and wife that run this place are the nicest, hardest working people. Makes you feel good to give them your business. Now let's talk about the food. This is the best Chinese food I've ever had.The chicken teriyaki is amazing and my wife is addicted to it. Its not your typical teriyaki. Its very very different and you have to try it.My wife has been dying to try the beef teriyaki but every time we order they are out of it so the last time I went here I asked them about it.She told me that due to supply chain issues the supplier has capped how much beef they can order and beef teriyaki uses a lot of beef. If they make beef teriyaki with their limited supply of beef then there won't be any beef for the stir fry, she explained. The husband heard us talking and came over to explain further that they don't use just any beef. The beef he orders costs him $12/lb when all the other restaurants in town use $3/lb beef.He is so proud of his beef he ran back to the kitchen and brought it out to show me as if I could tell the quality of the rare beef by looking at it. It was really cute. This is only the second restaurant in New Bern we have found that lives up to our high California standards. They are from San Francisco which explains a lot.I should also mention the price. Typically, we spend $30 eating out. Our typical bill at Canton rarely breaks $20.
If you're in New Bern, and you ever get Panda Express for any reason, you should be ashamed. Best Chinese takeout I've ever had.
Always excellent food. Very friendly service. Highly recommend
I have lived all over NC and Cantons is hands down the best Chinese food I have ever had! Been eating here ever since I was a kid, back when it was in Havelock. Nowadays I have to drive over half an hour to get to Cantons but it's always worth the trip. Best fried rice and best egg foo young!
