Great meal and atmosphere !
My husband and I usually have to drive an hour away to find a nice restaurant for special occasions.I'm originally from Morganton, and I remember when Root and Vine first opened. I never did get the chance to try it until now! Thankfully it's only about a 40 minute drive for us to get there. We went on a Friday evening, and were quickly seated. Our waitress was very helpful and attentive.I have to mention that the water they serve you actually tastes good! It didn't taste like nasty chlorinated city water. It's always such a let down when higher end restaurants serve low quality water.I have to eat gluten free, and the waitress and kitchen were very considerate of my needs. I was surprised to see how many options I had on the menu!We started with the cornmeal dusted oysters and braised mushroom small plates. They were absolutely amazing! I've never had a vegan dish that tasted so meaty and delicious.I had the Raspberry Gin Gimlet and my husband had the Rye Tai cocktail. Both were delicious, and went well with our starters. Unfortunately, there was a delay on my cocktail for some reason, so I didn't get it until near the end of my starter. For our entrees, I had the duck breast and my husband had the black Angus ribeye. My duck breast was cooked perfectly and tasted great. The ribeye was unfortunately cooked medium instead of medium rare, but since it was a good cut of meat, it was still tender. We were willing to overlook this error since it tasted good. We did need to add salt to both entrees, but it's pretty rare that you don't have to add salt at a restaurant. We ended up skipping dessert because they only had ice cream available for the gluten free option. We did have some coffee, which was a nice way to end the meal.We are looking forward to visiting again. It's not very often that you can have such a wonderful meal and service so close by.
I keep trying to get a meal at this wonderful restaurant, and it's never open anymore. Today, to be sure I could get in, I visited their website and read a clear and unambiguous statement that they were open now and would remain so until 2:30. Then they would close until 5, when they would reopen for dinner. So we get all gussied up for a nice meal and, of course, they were closed at 1 o'clock. The website is wrong. I've tried on Saturdays, and even some Fridays and found them to be closed during regular dining hours. How anyone can run a business like this is beyond me. Does that diminish they have the best food in town....no. But it's aggravating and yes I should have called, but I didn't. Get a grip Root and Vine. Fix your website.
Very good food and service
We stumbled across this gem while traveling and looking for a pet friendly dining option. The menu was impressive and did not disappoint. We were seated on the nice shaded multi-level table brick patio with water feature. The tables were nicely spaced and the staff were very friendly. They brought out a bowl of water for our pup, too. We had a berry basil iced tea and lazy hiker beer that were refreshing. I ordered the airline chicken breast with sun dried tomato pesto, mushroom and goat cheese risotto, and sautéed asparagus. It was cooked perfectly and was a generous portion. My husband ordered the special - a grilled salmon dish with siracha maple glazed fingerling potatoes and petite cauliflower. We both cleaned our plates and left pleasantly full. We haven’t eaten our desserts (ordered to go) but the strawberry mousse chocolate pie and banana pudding cheesecake look delicious. We highly recommend this restaurant — as does our dog.

First let me say that I know it has been difficult for restaurants to function without staff and we always consider the situation before making judgement. This was not a busy night and folks had cleared out so I am guessing maybe half capacity. It was our first time dining here, the host was pleasant and she let us know a table was being cleared in the “dining room”. A couple entered after we did and asked for a table in the dining room so we were seated at one of the three smaller tables at the bar that were in process of being cleared. Had we known, that the “dining room” would have been a better choice we would have spoken up. In our experience typically guests are seated according to order of arrival and if known, preference of area and then first available table …unless asked if the bar area is OK. We felt the hostess made a thoughtless decision that negatively impacted our first experience here. The timing with serving and clearing courses was lacking. On the maybe 2’x2’ sized table our choices were either turning our rectangle shaped plates sideways to eat or allowing our food to get cold while waiting for the previous course to be cleared. It was almost as pleasant as being seated at a dirty table. Tables in that area are so close together that the backsides of the servers for the adjacent tables were close enough to feel intrusive.
Nice atmosphere to have a quiet and enjoyable evening out.Great food options to select from but I went with a brickfired pizza and was glad I did.Enjoyed every bite of the pizza while drinking a local IPA....the one and only negative surprise was the cool (not cold) ...beer.If they add line chillers to their taps, this will be the place to go for a great pizza and wonderful drink.
Excellent food. Tried the special app - smoked salmon with pickled onions, salmon mousse. Excellent. Brussels sprout were excellent and I don’t always like them. Margherita pizza was very tasty, perfect crust, delicious sauce, yummy mozzarella and sweet fresh basil. Hubby had Rosso pizza, peppery, Italian sausage, pepperadews all excellent. The wine suggested by the waitress was very good. We had to wait for our seats and it was worth it. Sat at one of the two bars. Staff are all friendly. Enjoyable evening. Highly recommend this place.
This place was wonderful. We had a full 3 course meal. Everything was delicious. We had planned on going back the dame week just to try the pizza since their main courses where so good but closed early on Sundays. I would highly recommend. Staff was excellent too!!!
