I hadn't planned on hitting La Cocina while in Silver City, but our host at the Bear Mountain Lodge recommended it.... and late Sunday afternoon, nothing else was open save for a couple chain restaurants. So we ventured in, expectations well in check, especially since the previous evening's Mexican food in Silver City had been disappointing. The plain, square, spartan dining room did little to enhance expectations. But things improved rapidly once seated. We noticed the dining room was packed. I didn't know if that was because it was the only place open or if it was because this was known to locals as the place to go. I suspect it was a little of both. Chips and salsa arrived quickly and the salsa was positively scorching, but also had excellent flavor. Okay, this place is starting to look legit. I left the usual standard Mexican items and opted for the interesting sounding "enchilada style chimichanga" stuffed with carne asada. The asada was flavorful, having done a good job of soaking up the flavor of the marinade. The tortilla was perfectly fried, and the enchilada sauce was excellent. Good choice! Service was friendly and they seemed genuinely happy to have us there even though they were overrun at the time.
It may look like a renovated garage from the outside, but the food is excellent! The dining area was busy with locals, so we did take out and ate at the nearby park. There is lots to choose from on the menu. I had a chile relleno dish – the chile, cheese and sauces, beans and rice were all delicious. They also have very tasty hamburgers for those who prefer American style food. My wife reports the burger was great. The side salad was loaded with a mix of vegetables, way better than most side salads. We are from out of town, but the next time through, this would be our dinner stop again.
Not the typical Americanized Mexican food. Great selection of mostly authentic foods that can vary by day. Service is friendly, and the place is cozy. Definitely recommend.
Love La cocinita, I was going there back when it was que Rico. RIP...The waiters are the best around and typically remember my dad's order and stuff which is crazy to me. Only complaint I can give is the lack of pork. As a Cuban American that is a sin...But it is more of a Mexican restaurant and still can get a Torta and whatever I need.
Lo mejor de la comida Mexicana 🤤👌 Muy auténtica 🇲🇽
Every single time I come in to here, it is always a great experience. Jose is always so compassionate and kind This is one of my favorite places in Hickory. The tamales are the best! For my birthday, I had oneof the best slice of cake I've ever had and I was sung to. I love it!
It is more authentic Mexican style food. It has a better taste than the Mexican American style food at other restaurants. The portion size is ok but just a little bigger would be nice for the customer but the restaurant is clean and friendly bilingual wait staff. It was a good experience and I will return.
Off the tourist path and closer to the college, this is definitely a local place. Good, but not great, Mexican food. Good service. No ambiance.
Incredibly friendly and polite staff! One of the best qualities of food we have had in the area. Definitely would recommend this spot.
We ordered from the authentic menu and the food was very good. This is not your standard American-Mexican food. The staff was very friendly. Read other reviews and we did not experience any problems!! We will definitely be back. Just like a little taste of true Mexico.
