Although this place is extremely overrated, it's worth a visit. The burgers themselves were small and not as tasty as I thought they'd be. The fries have pepper all over them which I liked it but nobody else in my family did. The coleslaw on the chili was bland and kinda gross. The longer I write this the more I think you should just avoid it and question anyone that voted this the best burger place in the area

Al’s Burgers is a must try if you find yourself in Chapel Hill, NC. It is located just off the UNC campus and a local favorite. We had lunch there and were very satisfied with the entire experience. They have covered/uncovered seating and you order at the main counter and they run the food to your table. We had the Paco burger (Guacamole and Jalapeños), the Pimento Cheese burger, and the Cheddar Bacon burger. With a huge side of tater tots and crinkle fries. The burgers were excellent. We highly recommend Al’s if you are looking for a quick and easy lunch experience in Tarheel country.

I got the Paco burger and sweet potato fries, they were delicious! Staff was super helpful and friendly! Definitely worth checking out.

Best vegetarian burger in Chapel Hill!!!!! Perfect combo of salty and sweet! A must try if you are vegetarian!!!!

Awesome burgers! Fast service. Sweet potatoes fries are on point. Lots of outdoor seating. Inside is small but everyone masked ?

I could go on and on, gushing about Al's for eternity, but I know you don't want to sit here for that long so I'll try to keep it short and simple. I moved to Chapel Hill when I was nine and I have been eating Al's ever since. They have an amazing veggie burger, so vegetarians like me can go there without worrying about having to just eat some fries for dinner because they might not have options, but Al's does. Speaking of fries, their crinkle cut and sweet potato fries are devine, as well as their service. They might have a long line every once in a while, but the employees are so kind and attentive. Their system during quarantine made it quick and easy to get delicious food. The atmosphere of the interior is retro, cute, and really showcases the small business in a small-town vibe. Overall, I think Al's Burger Shack is my favorite restaurant in Chapel Hill, and most likely will be until the day I die.

Great burgers! Been a few times - have not met Al yet.

One of the best burgers ever! They really take a lot of care in making their burgers and they are mouthwatering!

Al's Burger Shack offers delicious burgers, fries, and great service! You order inside their tiny kitchen and can eat outside under a open, but covered seating area or an uncovered area that has more picnic tables. When we sat down at a picnic table, staff immediately offered us a portable propane heater which was really nice on a cold night! They many delicious burger options, including the classic burger with tomato, lettuce, and onion. They also offer a turkey burger, fried chicken, or sweet potato, black bean, and oat patty. The sweet potato patty was delicious and the sweet potato fries were crispy and salted perfectly, so the fries weren't overwhelmingly sweet. The large fries are a ton of fries--more than enough for two people to share! My husband ordered the classic burger and said it was the best burger he's had, that it's "the burger that other burgers want to be." :) All staff were wearing face masks, which was great to see. We will definitely visit Al's again because they offer great food and excellent service.
