This place is simply amazing and customer service is one of the best I ever had. Food is awesome, specially the powerball. The rose lassi is beyond comprehension. I wish it was not only a shop but also a hotel so I’d move there and spend all my free time there too. Everything’s so great that the right thing would be a 10 star review, but google is not prepared for that yet.
By far the best authentic East Indian mithai selection!!! The shop is owned and operated by Craig Wishart, an interesting and well travelled PhD; the kitchen at Mithai is operated by an ex El Salvadoran army commander. Together they truly make the best authentic Bengali mithai, the quality of the sweets in my experience has always been consistent and exceptional. The mithai selections are always fresh and never doused in sugary syrups to mask inferior , the milk is sourced from Homeland Creamery in Julian NC. This is the kind of a shop where the owner will never compromise on his product offerings and is ever so passionate about his quaint little mithai heaven.
First, the guy gave me a look when I told him I needed another lassi in addition to the two I already had (I ordered 3 but for some reason he heard 2). Then, when I asked for to-go boxes and told him that the leftover food wasn't fitting in one box so can he give me one more, his reply was "you are good, you don't need more". That was so shocking. Finally, when my friend went to ask for a plastic bag he literally saw outside the store to see if we had food left, else would have said no to that too. This was the most bizzare experience I have ever had in my life. One of the worst customer service example.
Oof. I visited Mithai with an Indian friend looking for celebratory treats for a special occasion. When we first walked in, the white owner was incredibly condescending and argumentative about my friend's heritage and connection to the treats we were seeking out. We ultimately stayed to buy some specific things from Mithai. Months later after posting an honest review of her experience, the owner took retaliatory action to seek out and post personal identifying information from her order form to harrass and threaten her over the phone and online. He has continued to escalte his threats to her online.
The man working behind the counter was absolutely terrible. He needs to calm down. My own sister she’s very young, she was messing with the plant and he yelled at her. She is 7!!! He told us to get out of the shop because of this and told my parents to take care of their children. Absolutely unacceptable!!!! Maybe if you have experience raising a child properly or know how a child works you wouldn’t have yelled at her. You made the child cry. Shame on you!!! This is why you are getting bad reviews. I have read the reviews here and you are trying to explain your self there is no explanation for rude behavior. You should know how to take care of a customer and have good customer service skills. As a Starbucks employee who runs the shop on my own I know how to handle customers (even if they are rude). My dad owns a shop a local shop and he has had kids break things in the store he didn’t yell because he knows kids can be immature (as they should be because that’s how kids are). Learn customer service skills and DONT make excuses for yourself!!!
I would give this place and the storekeeper a 0 rating. We were verbally abused for calling back because we didn’t understand the statement in the voicemail. For that we were called many things (racial comments included) and we were yelled at and forced out. Frustrated storekeeper taking it out on the customers. Not a place for anything except flies. To storekeeper: There are other ways to let customers know that back to back calls are troublesome, not straight out yelling just because they walked into your place to give you some business. Don’t soft corner yourself, we wouldn’t have called the cops unless it was too disturbing. Your actions threatened a physical abuse that day.
We had a good time and spent having samosas, Chole with sweets with Masala tea. There is no dine-in , however some open space outside. With cold and heat it’s not comfortable mostly designed for takeaway.
I ordered some sweets for a friend as a surprise, and this store never delivered them. FIVE DAYS after I placed my order, I was told they were "unable to attend to online orders" due to Diwali demand, and to let them know if I was still interested - this despite the fact that orders are supposed to be shipped within a couple of days, and shipping costs $10!I asked them to still deliver the order late (see screenshot), but it was still never delivered. I had to finally ask my friend to call them and get a refund, which defeated the whole purpose of a surprise gift.My friend later visited this place personally, had a really bad experience with the white owner who thinks he is entitled to tell Indians about Indian food (and, incredibly, their own background!). Avoid this place!!
Please do yourself a favor and find somewhere else to get your Indian sweets. As many reviews already state, the owner is extremely strange, condescending, and rude. Expect to get greeted with an attitude and receive unwarranted lectures. Truly an abnormal experience and I was appalled at the level of unprofessionalism shown by the owner. On top of that, the sweets here are very mediocre which makes it even less worthy your time and money. Please avoid.Response to the owner: I visited your store 1-2 months ago and ordered mithai and a few other snacks. Never placed a “big wedding order”. Please check your facts before you make outlandish remarks about a customer. I am not surprised that your immediate response was to get defensive and avert blame instead of offering an apology, as that requires a level of maturity and professionalism that you severely lack. Expecting basic customer service does not make me entitled, but that comment alone explains why you have consistently been getting negative remarks about your behavior. Thank you for further proving my initial review.
My friends and I were yelled at as soon as we entered the store. There was an argument btw the store keeper and my friend. While my friend was asking the store keeper to be nice he yelled and called us so many things. Then he forced us to leave the store. I was shocked not knowing why we were receiving that kind of treatment. I was scared that he might hit us (he didn’t). I cried after getting into the car to relieve myself from the shock. Not a good place. Never in my life am going to this place ever.
