I've been to You Garden Xiao Long Bao in Bayside a couple times now, and so far it's my favorite spot for soup dumplings in New York. I've tried a few of their varieties but have to say that the original pork soup dumplings are my favorite. The filling has such great flavor while the skin is delightfully delicate. Love that they give a free order of XLB for tables that order $10 or more! My other favorites here are the panfried pork buns and the panfried pork&veg wontons. So delicious!
We walked to this cozy establishment from our AirB&B, which took about five minutes. We ordered the crab dumplings, and with it a complementary pork soup dumplings; both were delicious. In addition, we ordered couple of traditional Shanghai style appetizers; average nothing to bragged about. Wife also ordered some Peking duck; she liked it. Overall, decent place to dine in a very causal atmosphere. Price is reasonable and the service is quite efficient. This restaurant also serves traditional Chinese breakfast in the morning until 11am.
Our daughter suggested we try this place so we ordered take out. It seems this place is pretty busy because there’s lines. We got pork soup dumplings, crab meat pork soup dumplings, shrimp soup dumplings and lucky six soup dumplings. They didn’t give us the sliced ginger but did give us many containers of sauce. I thought the wraps and the soup were ok but the stuff meat in all soup dumplings is rather dry and not as juicy as what I used to have at other place but my daughter thought it wasn’t that dry. Anyhow we think it’s quite pricey. However they seem to have other dishes that look good and we might give a try next time. Note: This place is CASH ONLY.
Really great food! Super tasty and it came out extremely fast!! They have us enough time to look over the menu and then took our order, food came out in intervals in less than 2 minutes. Everything was delicious, the sesame ball was fried nicely and crisp. Also the soup dumplings were good! Scallion pancakes were nice and crispy too. I would definitely come back to this place!
Their rice balls are soo good (fan tuan )
I’ve been coming here since right after they opened a few years ago, but tonight was my first time back in almost two years since the beginning of the first lockdown... Although I'd been dreaming fondly of Shanghai You Garden, and spoke highly of it to many friends many times over the years, today everything came down crashing and burning... All day long for the past week I was planning my dinner here.. I looked at hundreds of menus & pictures on multiple platforms, and even made sure to study the most updated menu on their website very carefully... Because it is cash only, I made sure to bring just enough, because it is very unsafe to carry too much, and I never carry my ATM card because of all the subway crimes these days; since I live 90 minutes away (each direction), I need to be safe. I intentionally ordered the whole peking duck platter because I wanted to take half home... The only thing better than one amazing meal is two or three amazing meals... I like to make broth out of the bones & leg meat & leg skin, then make veggie stews... So I intentionally ate half of everything and asked for the other half to go... Then they dropped the check! I guess I didn't look at today's menu, I already knew what I wanted and I ordered it verbally -- since I'd looked at menu pictures posted yesterday AND i looked at their updated website specific for this location, I trusted that everything would go smoothly, but boy was I wrong... It was bonkers! I had enough money to pay for all of the food and all of the tax but only a little bit for tip, since the menu prices had somehow increased overnight... I didn't think this would be a big deal, because I was a solo diner, they never brought me any napkins or water, I didn't even get to use the dang bathroom, and I ate very quickly because I had to get back home quickly for a long distance call... I couldn't tip very much this time because of the unexpected price hike, but I would have gladly tipped extra the next time I visited... I would have even made a special trip just to make things right. But instead, the manager came over and humiliated me, boxed me in the corner, breathed down my neck, prevented me from moving, said that I could not leave until I paid more tip money... Except, first, isn't tipping optional? And, second, I did tip some, but I have been a customer for years, I would come back again soon and tipped extra next time, but the manager absolutely did not care... He was mean and intimidating and threatening and hostile. He treated me like I was trying to steal thousands of dollars. I asked him if they had Zelle, he said yes, and I sent him the extra $4 he demanded -- even though, again, isn't tipping VOLUNTARY? I'm fairly sure the manager's actions weren't legal, but needless to say, this is no longer the charming elegant place I once adored. It now seems to be very abrasive-impersonal turn-and-burn, which I abhor, and perhaps worst of all, the duck skin wasn't crispy, it was soggy and flabby... Oh, and they threw away all my cucumbers and spring onions and hoisin sauces rather than wrapping them up like I asked them! They threw away my property that I paid for, so now it looks like they're the ones who owe me!
Authentic dishes in authentic surroundings as you would expect in this very Chinese part of NYC. My Chinese-American friends often eat here and I can see why.
Delicious food - the shrimp dumplings in particular were excellent. Very affordable, ~65 for 4 people before tax. Service was fast and the servers gave us a dessert on the house too.
This is a great place to have a soup dumplings ( xiaolong bao). Usually lines are long around lunch on the weekend so come before 11:30am or come during the weekday .
The price is reasonable. Our server was pleasant and cheerful. The other servers were also snappy. I enjoyed their Peking duck. But i was disappointed with their chicken feet. Not tender enough.
