Owner is very impatient and rude. If you want to dine here , please make sure you know what you want before going in . Don't ask too much questions. Also for 2 wraps of punded yam , they give a very small portion of soup that can hardly be enough. They sell mostly goat meat , no beef , no cow skin (ponmon) . I wouldn't recommend this place.
I'm going to only give 3 Star my honest opinion the customer service okay can be better the food eats good alot of rice 3 pieces of meat ask for extra sauce think she said $3 or $5 the meals are overpriced and the meat portions is a no no clean place tho as far as I can see been to a couple other african restaurants so far I put them first except the ones in Philadelphia a plate of food Is $12 to $14 dollars and tast better too
Disgraceful and tasteless phone service. Young worker hand no clue what kind of vegetable Edikaikong was. Then the manager hung up on me after telling me that it was spinach. When I called back to complete my question, she rushed me with such a typical attitude.I am also from West Africa. It's sad to experience such horrible service from a neighboring country. Shows how we still have a long way to go.Ended up ordering African food elsewhere, where the food and service was impeccable!
I really love this place. I been going for years. The owner is so gracious and kind, and the food is FRESH and Delicious. My absolute favorite African spot in NYC period!!!! I love love love the egusi with a pounded yam and sweet plantains on the side. Always hot and fresh.
Nice little spot near the subway station.
It was the first time I eat their oxtail and food and there place is clean and the food is well done ? I hope to go back the soon.
It was a very cold but sunny 2nd Saturday in January. I had finished with JFK airport, and had a few hours to kill before busing back to Philadelphia. So I decided to treat myself to some traditional Nigerian cuisine. Looked up Africana and walked there quickly yet gingerly (leftover snow and ice was all over the streets).I showed up a few minutes after they opened. Ordered the egusi soup w/ pounded yam (dine in), and yam porridge w/ spinach instead of meat (to go). I also had a little ginger soda. My total came to $37. NYC is expensive (no surprise there).Summary: Unsmiling cook/owner, impatient attitude, decent service, capped by a DELICIOUS meal. Clean bathroom, too. Good location, only 10 mins easy walk from Jamaica station."But Chinedu..." (you ask slightly puzzled) "...why give it 4 stars if they had a less-than-great attitude"?Well because nobody in their right mind goes to a Nigerian (or Chinese) restaurant for good attitude or patience. Nigerians ESPECIALLY have a really difficult time being nice/kind to one another (without some ulterior motive, I mean). Additional layer: New Yorkers are world-reknowned for being naturally rude anyway (and proud of it)! Point is, forget about "American standard niceness to customers", not only in this particular restaurant Africana, but across the socially-wretched dUSA in general. The ONLY exception I know of, is the unexpectedly-professional restaurant staff at Lagos Island Cafe in Houston TX. I hope the pandemic didn't shut them down.Anyway for eateries like Africana in NYC, it's best to CALL and order food To Go, which is what I observed while I was enjoying my lip-smacking grub... At least 5 people came to pick up (or order To Go, wait for it, pay, and leave). In summary: if I lived in NYC, I'd rarely dine in at Africana, and I'd definitely not bring a date here ? but I'd definitely order To Go A LOT, over the phone, knowing EXACTLY what Nigerian dish I want. And I would DESTROY the tasty, flavorful, delicious meal like it owed me money ?And at the end of the day, isn't THAT what it's all about? The food. Enjoy!
Extremely friendly staff, it was my first time visiting this restaurant( due to my daughter and her love for tik-tok)I wasn’t quite sure what to get. One of the ladies was more than happy to explain and show me the food. I end up getting fufu with red stew sauce and it was delicious ? very pleasant experience , highly recommend! Well worth the drive
This is the food they said they put red sauce on. I ask for it the boss was sooo rude there is the pic.
The scotch egg I ordered was a little overcooked, but everything else was perfect. I'm giving them 5 stars anyway. Will definitely eat here again.
