We went to Waxlight on Aug 6 for our Anniversary and they treated us so well. Very attentive service with amazing food and drinks. A very nice wine selection as well. This is our new go to restaurant!
We started out at the bar, not a warm welcome I have to say, then we were seated and totally welcomed. We had our wine, then food started to come out and everything was delicious!! Then the pork dish with beet spatzel came out, I could not eat, one of us thought it was supposed to taste that way, my husband couldn't eat and we told the other person to not eat, it was definitely rotten meat. We were told there was sauerkraut in the dish, it's not mentioned in description, and no way tasted like it, it honestly tasted rotten. It was taken off our bill, but it absolutely was rotten meat, you could taste and smell. Sorry. We loved the place until that point.
Excellent and unusual food. Lots of vegetarian options. Highly recommend—will definitely return.
Interesting experience! The ambience is great and the service was excellent. Cocktails are unique - I had an aperol whip which was light and well balanced flavor wise. The food menu was a bit confusing but I tried a few of the smaller plates and a dessert. The waiter was well aware of gluten free options and which had the possibility of cross contamination. The chick pea and pumpkin panisse with orange turmeric yogurt was an interesting combination of flavors but not one that I particularly enjoyed. I also tried the pommes paillasson which was essentially a giant hash brown. The highlight was the grilled sweet potato ice cream with blood orange, it was just the right touch of sweetness and very light on the palate. All in all, a very unique experience and worth it for the ambience and drinks alone! Food options are definitely for refined foodies with an adventurous palate!
Service was friendly and helpful, and also considerate of covid safety, although nobody in the restaurant or any of the staff were wearing masks, we were, and when the server approached to ask how the food was they stood back 6 ft so we didn't have to put our mask back on, which I thought was courteous. The atmosphere was very nice, plush velour chairs, lots of live plants, old fashioned ceiling fixtures and then an overall industrial feel to the restaurant with the walls and ceiling. Only complaints about the atmosphere are that the table was very small and there was terrible punk rock music playing the first 15 minutes we were there. We ordered four dishes, the smoked rice balls with olive and cheese, the root vegetable blanquette, a rutabaga with lemon sauce and Salisbury duck meatballs with mushrooms. We both enjoyed the smoked rice balls the best, great texture, great flavor, would definitely eat those again. My friend said the duck meatballs and mushrooms were great and he rated those four stars. The rutabaga was....meh. not much flavor to it and the menu said it was cooked overnight but it still wasn't soft. The lemon sauce that was on it had a decent flavor with a runny consistency. The root vegetable blanquette had a nice silky mouthfeel, but the flavor was lacking, quite bland. There's no salt or pepper on the tables either, which always feels to me like a display of arrogance. We both agreed that overall it's not a place we would likely go back to, especially considering the portion size and the price, small portions that are overpriced. I wouldn't mind that if it was higher quality organic food but it's not. I love that they have very creative dishes, but I think they're doing themselves a disservice with how the menu is presented, the average person would have to Google almost every dish on the menu because of how they choose to word the description of the dishes, only someone that was moderately knowledgeable about cuisine and culinary lingo would understand the details of each dish on the menu. That can come off as a bit pretentious, and I think they're going to lose some customers who are going to look at the menu, not understand it and not feel like being bothered with the task of googling what everything is.
Hey young man! You say you have a date who you really want to impress? Bring her here. The kitchen staff are a bunch of well-trained and clever folks working with the finest and freshest ingredients. The front of the house are curtious, quick and do they know their food and wine! You will love the experience and she just might fall in love with you!
TLDR: 10/10, a true gem in BuffaloWhere to begin?Don't. Skip. The. Chips. From entrance to exit this was truly an experience. The ambience is industrial chic but with actual personality. We were promptly greeted, sat and brought water before being introduced to our server Jessica (one of 5 owner operators).Personally, I love the way they take the entire order at once. You get time to settle in and think over the menu while you enjoy your pre dinner drinks, it also makes for less hubbub during the meal.Service was phenomenal and the food was a perfect blend of flavor forward "snacks" and generous main plates. As the price grows, so does the portion.Chips and spin dip, pork sausage croquettes, beef tongue with potatoes, seared fluke and rack of lamb rounded out our savory portion with "burned" basque cheesecake and a White Russian to cap off a sensational meal. They don't call it bar a vin for nothing and we went for a bottle of 2020 Morgon (Gamay grape from Beaujolais) that paired beautifully across the board. Jessica is a sommelier and agreed it was a good choice for both the fish and meat dishes. Honestly, I've never had a wine so young taste so delicious. Perhaps I don't drink enough Morgon or Jessica really knows how to pick them (I much prefer the latter). All pretention aside, this was an incredible dinner from start to finish and what makes it so inviting is that you can get away with a couple glasses of wine and a few snacks and still have an incredible experience. If you haven't been, don't delay any further.
Honestly, everything here was delicious and the service was lovely. I enjoyed it too much to keep up with photos. All the cocktails-I had 3 of the many they have and all 3 were great. My goal is the be a new regular here it was that good. The music, ambiance and decor as well. Go here, you deserve it.
I dined here for the first time this week with some girlfriends. We all absolutely loved the dining experience here!! The food was outstanding & so unique. The cocktails were so crafty & delicious. The service was wonderful and the atmosphere tied the perfect dining experience all together. I will definitely be back!!!
Made a reservation for our anniversary. The staff was super friendly from the minute we arrived. The food was amazing, easily one of the best meals I’ve ever had. Knowledgeable about the wine list and recommendations were on point. Comfortable, cozy atmosphere.
