I like the concept of comfort food + asian food bodega combo. It is a fun shop that has a lot to offer. The menu is unique and fun combinations. I tried a whitefish bahn mi and a congee. They were executed well, but I found them to be a bit too salty. Finally, the black sesame drink was good, but the seseme wasn't completely blended in. There were some flecks of sesame that made the drink a little grainy. Maybe a preference thing, but I prefer something more smooth. I like the concept, but just have some nitpicks on the execution.
Cool place with interesting Asian products, including Sichuan peppercorns and curry paste. I ordered the pork Bahn Mi and was very disappointed. Sad stale bread, flavors were ok, not much pork. Might go back to try the congee.
I would give them 10 stars if I could.Discovered this place in 2018. This was the first time I had congee, I fell in love.I tried the entire menu (expect for pork items) and I love them all, but the Gone Fishin’ got my heart.I have a bowl once a month at least, or I don’t feel whole.
Whatever they are selling is not congee. We don't need more shops like this to whitewash Cantonese food (don't even get me started on how they generalised themselves as "Asian" grocery as if people don't already think all Asians are the same). They could have named their bowl something else (at most "inspired by congee") but instead they decided to bastardise a well-beloved classic. This is as offensive as opening an "Italian" place and putting pineapple on pizza; there is such double standards when it comes to "Asian" food. Let that sink in before you decided to give your money to an establishment feeding into this issue.
Maya idk who you are but this food is good okay? The breakfast sandwich has truly changed my life. Also the congee? It snatched my soul from my body. DELICIOUS.
Also my Vietnamese iced coffee, while tasty, was hot at the bottom
Wish this place were good. You can get Secret Aardvark here but the congee isn’t good and the soup took ~45 minutes to come out
this is a white mans congee, not real congee…there is basically no congee and all toppings. there was quinoa in my congee
Yummy take on Congee
Def a western twist on traditional congee, which is supposed to be 'plain' and light on the stomach. But still, I enjoyed this variation: generous amount of toppings, rich flavors and spices, over a heartier grain base. I do wish the ratio gives you more congee than toppings though.I also liked the sesame milk tea, which wasn't too sweet!
