I've been curious about this place for years. It's far off the tourist path and unfortunately I'm a tourist. I made the pilgrimage with high hopes resting on the roast beef sandwich. The restaurant is great, caught in a time warp from a time long passed. And I'm so happy locals are keeping the place going. The negativity of this review more focuses on tourist not making the long journey out to the area than discouraging any natives. The roast beef sandwich is a timeless icon. However, it fell flat for me. The bread was already soft and turned to mush in the juice. As a fan of French dips and Italian beefs I like bread drenched in beef juice, but this one is way too soft for that. American cheese/Kraft singles have their place, usually to add creaminess, but with the mushy bread it added no flavor and worse texture. The beef is lightly seasoned and lacked true beefiness. And the juice is nearly flavorless and begs for more salt and beefier flavor. Our service was hospitality albeit very dry. With other tables, servers could be seen rolling eyes as they walked away from moderately high maintenance tables. Actually quite entertaining to watch, won't be surprised if a server jumps up on a table and punts a ketchup from one end of the restaurant to the other soon(kidding, but maybe).
There is no better roast beef. This sounds crazy but roast beef sandwhich “no bun” will blow your mind. Also never for get to ask for more gravy it Is The quintessential piece to the Brennan & Carr experience.
True old world service and atmosphere. Roast beef is indescribably delicious. The broth is heavenly!
One word, AMAZING. If you want melt in your mouth roast beef then this is the place to go. And DO NOT MISS the pie. We split a slice of blueberry and it was best pie I have eaten in years. Lunch or dinner Brennan & Carr is a must go.
Historic local spot - roast beef sandwich with a side of gravy… can’t beat it
It’s a good roast beef. Glad we went for the experience. There is parking. Get cheese & onions on it! Next time we will prob try something else but definitely worth trying at least once.
The roast beef au jus and onion rings are my go to. I have loved it since the first time I visited years ago. Everything on the menu is delicious but these are my favs!
Only rating this based on this specific sandwich. I do want to say that i've eaten here many times as a kid and normally this is 5 stars. This rating is based solely on takeout that then traveled 2 hours before I got it. And it's STILL 4 stars.I have many good memories with my Father here so for that alone I am so happy that this place is still around. For the area the prices are decent and (when open inside) a nice place to grab a small meal. They are however, my 2nd favorite place to get a Roast Beef in the general area...I won't say the first hahaSo this sandwich traveled to the Poconos and was still hot and delicious when I got it. The roll wasn't destroyed (got my au jus on the side to dip rather than get it dipped there) and the meat was as excellent as I ever remember it being. What else can you say? If you're from the area...then you already know. If you're not, get in there and find out.
Absolutely the best Beef & cheese in the five boroughs. My go to KFJ. The Knife and Fork Job. I also recommend and mug of Budweiser. It comes in a frosted beer mug. 1 1/2 sandwiches, French fries, and a Budweiser is my go to!
Always amazing... ive bee coming here since the early 90's and it is still the same! Love it.
