Hot Mess BBQ & Soul Food is a small store, what we call a mom and pop store. Basically, a cashier and a kitchen person run this place. We ordered food from this store twice. The first time we got some ribs and today, we picked up some brisket. All I can say is they have some good food. We found the soul in their food.We must support small stores run by minorities that are making a genuine effort at hard work and producing good food. Both times, they were fast. They have a small dining area. Please don’t expect anything free. They are new and meat is not cheap. We must give them an opportunity to turn a profit, become successful and make a longtime presence in our community. We really need more small businesses and mom and pop stores. Small businesses are a fundamental pillar of the US economy and Albuquerque’s economy. Some of the reviewers stated that the food did not meet expectations. This happens. We fall in love with something we ate somewhere or something we ate for a long time. That alone does not make the food at Hot Mess BBQ & Soul Food bad. It may take some of us time to appreciate the taste of a new place. Soul food, like any other food, comes in varying tastes and shapes. They can still find a place within our taste system.Overall, a great experience. I wish these guys all the luck possible to become very successful and be a longtime member within our community.
Really disappointed, I wanted some great fried chicken and greens. We ordered the catfish , Mac n cheeseA side of beans. The other order was 2 dark meat fried chicken with greens and a side of coleslaw. Peach cobbler for dessert. The catfish and beans were great. The Mac n cheese was horrible! The fried chicken was very dry and no taste as with the coleslaw had no taste .The greens were excellent.Peach cobbler tasted and looked many days old.$40 on a lunch and only 3 items we were able to eat.
This is some really good barbecue. We had. The sampler which had brisket pulled pork, half a rack of ribs and some sausage. The ribs were excellent and so was the brisket. The pulled pork had a lot of fat in it and the sausage was pretty good. They have a good hot barbecue sauce or you can try the mild. We also had the fried okra which was excellent and we had the macaroni and cheese which was a little dry. They don't have fountain drinks, only canned and bottled sodas and Arizona tea and water. There's not a whole lot of room to sit in the restaurant itself so you may have to take it to go. I plan on going back to try the catfish and the wings.
So we got the brisket sandwich, 1/2 lb pulled pork, baked beans, French fries and potato salad. The sides were good, the BBQ was dry. The sauce was incredible. Also the girl at the counter took back Ranch that was unused on someone’s tray, which is a health and safety no no.I would not recommend or return, which is a bummer since we came once when it was closed and made sure to come back when it was open.
As with all BBQ, it's subjective but they make delicious soul food on top of their delicious bbq! I love their shrimp and grits and all their side dishes! Their pork ribs are bone sucking good! They also offer fried liver and gizzards. I can't say enough good things about how well it's seasoned. My only complaint is that they (assuming) cook/boil the gizzards to soften the texture but I think it's too soft. I really didn't like the texture.
Not bad, but just off the mark for a southerner. No sweet tea was available so that's one star off ??. I ordered the Southern Fries with okra and my son ordered the catfish. The portion was awesome ??. No fountain drinks available ??. My son loved the Mac and Cheese saying it was some of the best he's had ??I would recommend it but with a touch here and there, it would be a complete soul food place.... everyone in the south knows soul food places have hot sauce on the table ?
Absolutely fantastic! Great discovery we made today with The Hot Mess.Best catfish I've had in 40+ years, no exaggeration. They do their okra right, too. I'm coming back to try everything on their menu in the next few weeks.Mmmmmmm!Keep up the great work!
By far the worst Mac and cheese ever! Literally no cheese. The smoked Wings were dry and flavorless the catfish was soggy. And it was over priced! Hot mess is a fitting name for this!
First time at Hot mess, and I’m NOT impressed.I ordered 1/2 pound of pulled pork, and Mac and cheese.I wanted the collard greens but they were out.I ordered to go, and for 1/2 pound of meat they gave me 2 Oz of bbq sauce. The Mac and cheese was disgusting. It was dry with not much cheese, over cooked macaroni, and no flavor. The inside of the building was dirty, exposed wiring.Uncovered light switches.Definitely NOT going back!
I really wanted some good fried catfish, so while looking through reviews, my partner found this place. We read one of the reviews, mentioning that the fried catfish is the best in Albuquerque. So we went with it as our choice.Service was wonderful and quick. It’s a smaller place, but only two other people were dining in at the time, so not bad.Once we got the food, we knew we made the right choice. Even just looking at the catfish, we knew it was going to be perfection. It was FANTASTIC. Perfectly crisp on the outside and cut like butter. The flavor of the batter was so good and the filet, itself, was huge! And baked macaroni was delicious, as well!Hot Mess is definitely a great place to go, if you want fried catfish. I’d love to see how the BBQ is, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to choose anything but that catfish. I mean look at that photo.
