Sazanami provides some of the most complex, beautiful, and delicious food I have ever had the pleasure of eating at a restaurant. I have been to 2 Michelin star Japanese dinners in LA, and they pale in comparison at what is offered at this humble establishment. Every time I come here, I am astonished at how much care and effort goes into these gorgeously plated dishes of curry or karaage or tamago. The chefs are very kind, the aesthetic is very pretty, and the curry is truly something special; an absolute must visit when in NJ and worth a long drive!Side note: The green tea is very tasty, give it a try!
Summary: A hole-in-the-wall Japanese curry place that is SO WORTH a visit. Delicious and tasteful Japanese curry with a variety of protein. Highly recommend! Dine in and takeout available! Small parking lot in the back.My husband and I visited Sazanami for the first time on a Saturday afternoon. If you love Go! Go! Curry!, then you will drop dead for Sazanami!! I'm not joking, they are serving up some delicious curry that you won't regret having! To start off, we shared the Salmon Mango salsa (chunks of bell peppers, salmon and Mango wrapped with avocado and topped with a spicy mayo sauce). This was fantastic in flavor and the presentation was so simple yet beautiful! I really loved it and kind of wished I ordered my own, haha. For our entrees, I ordered the pork cutlet curry while my husband ordered the hamburger curry (the hamburger curry will take longer to cook since it is a thick ball of ground beef, just something to be mindful of). All entrees come with rice and a small miso soup. Both pork cutlet and hamburger were cooked perfectly and went so well with the curry. The flavor and richness of the curry was to die for!! The turmeric spice is very present in the taste and I just loved it! (if you're not a fan of turmeric, you may not like their curry then ??) But eating it together with the rice and pork was just some kind of heaven I never knew existed, I'm not exaggerating. If you're a curry lover, you NEED to stop by Sazanami. You won't regret it!They have other menu items as well such as some sushi rolls and appetizers. I'm definitely looking forward to my next visit. I don't live close but this would be worth the drive.

Take it as a compliment but this little hole in the wall have some excellent curry. Matching it up with different type of protein is delicious. My favorite is the hamburger. That medium cook with that spicy curry does the job . To me it just soak up the flavor. They have side dish to order and sushi roll. This was a great find for me.
Sazanami is a charming lil curry spot - their rich, spicy curry goes well with all the delicious add-ons they offer. From pork katsu to garden veggies to hearty pumpkin croquettes and more, they have something for everyone! Don't forget to add cheese ?
Got the garden vege curry and the tamago yakko. The food was flavorful and tasted very fresh. Vegetables straight from the garden. The tamago yakko was amazing. The sauce has a spiciness to it and complemented the silken tofu and onsen egg. Will definitely be coming back.
BYOB!It's like coming home and you don't want to leave. There are two talented people carefully preparing the food to the utmost quality. The customer service is quite lovely, as well.We had the Katsune Curry and the Chicken Curry, both were hot homemade masterpieces.Delicious.They have iced oolong tea which is fun too.We were so hungry I forgot to take pictures of the food.We will have to come back again!
My wife and I have only ordered takeout/delivery (4 or 5 times), but its been delicious and consistent each time. There don’t seem to be many of these around either so I’m happy to support. Great option for a weeknight dinner when you don’t want to cook or have worn out all the other options. I wish the pizza places still made their cutlets as thick as Sazanami does.
I love curry! This place is the only place I know that gives not 3, but FOUR fried ebi fry shrimp?! ? my shrimp runneth over. You can ask them for spicier curry too. Also the manager owner is really funny.
Came for lunch with my father, we were curious to see what replaced the sushi restaurant that was here before, Hiura, and were pleasantly surprised to see a japanese curry restaurant. We ordered gyoza, katsu curry, and korokke curry. The gyoza was surprisingly homemade; the meat was bit dry, but overall tasty and the gyoza sauce could use a bit more love as well. The katsu with the katsu curry was surprisingly soft, and very crunchy! The korokke was probably the best thing we had! It was homemade as well, with pumpkin and pork, the korokke was soft inside, sweet to taste (nicely complementing the spicy curry), and very crunchy outside! I would definitely come back here just for that!My only complaints were the curry itself was tasty and spicy, but lacking a bit in depth of flavor. The rice was also a bit undercooked, and the ratio of curry to rice was a bit off (ended up with hardly any curry for the rest of the rice and korokke). The restaurant was also extremely warm/hot inside, seemingly no AC was on so we got a bit sweaty.Overall, I enjoyed the food. I'll definitely make a trip back here to update my review. I love that a majority of everything is homemade, and I hope that trend continues through the life of the restaurant, but I feel quality needs to be carefully attended to.I would normally of docked 2 stars, but I feel the potential and homemade approach are hard to come by so hopefully this place thrives more with good feedback.
