I have been coming to Swagath for 15 yrs. Still three years ago the best Poori Bhaji was served here. Today I decided to go back and was truly disappointed. When I came in i only saw one customer. I didn’t think much of it because it was early for dinner 4:50pm. when the waitress gave us a table. I realized it was dirty so I asked her if we could sit in the next one , me trying to be nice I didn’t tell her why. She rolled her eyes at me. Then she handed the menus. The first red flag was when I asked for a dosa. She said no dosas. We have uttapam. A South Indian restaurant that does not serve dosas! I should have got up and left, but I decided to stay and have my favorite poori bhaji. The orders took forever. How long does it take to prepare this food? There were no customers in the restaurant just me and a woman who also looked annoyed because she had asked for coffee and they took long to bring it to her. By her facial expression she was not enjoying her meal either. That was the second red flag another unhappy customer. When the food came I was shocked to see what we got. The food looked like child portions. One small uttapam with coconut chutney which tasted like coconut oil. The sambhar had no taste it was just hot and watery. They only gave 2 pooris with only one curry when I used to get three plus pickle. I ordered Rasmalai which tasted like cough syrup and the sauce looked like slime It was very unappetizing. A far cry from what I remember eating here. The worst part how expensive it was. There is no way this food is worth $60 dollars. I didn’t protest with the sad decision to never come back. I could have a better meal for less than that elsewhere. I should have gone to Dosa hut. Hoping this food doesn’t make us sick,it didn’t look fresh. I know times are hard many restaurants are struggling to stay afloat. Making customers feel like fools is not going to help. I wish you good luck in your business. ??
We visited this place today evening, We had high hopes after watching their YouTube videos on how they started and running the business. We were welcomed with a tomato rasam, though this was nice gesture, it was like a raw paparika water. We ordered dosa varieties the dosas were good but the Sambar had a punch of sweetness in it. Our hopes were short lived :-(
I went to the restaurant yesterday, wasn't crowded. Didn't wait much before we were seated. Had to wait at least 15 min before someone came to get our order. Had to wait another 15 min before food was served. Food didn't taste anything south India. Was charged $15 for mini thali although the menu didn't say anything about Thali being mini.Very Disappointed with the service and the quality of food.
Celebrated Ugadi at Swagath Gourmet @swagath_amma in New Jersey. A traditional banana leaf meal brought a sweet memories when we had a privilege serve the meal on banana leaves to the Siddhus at Kumbha Mela. And we were treated in a similar way, as today, at the old Hindu monastery in Varanasi. (BTW, the best way is to eat this food by hand, no spoons of fork) ? This restaurant can accommodate your vegan needs. The dhal and dosa can't be missed!!!
loved it.......best place in edison to dine indian breakfast with family....customer service is great.....ambience is nice...one must try ravva masala dosa with extra onion....complimentry rasam soup is delicious...
Excellent vegetarian food options. Great place for South Indian food. Especially variety of dosas are delicious and worth trying. They also have Thali options if you like a little of everything as traditional South Indian plate.Customer service is amazing. Have seen very few restaurants where the owners work directly with customers and get feedback. Great quality home style food at it’s best.
The best Indian food for years. This is the only spot I really enjoy. Samosa’s, pakora, paper mysori dosa, rasam, mango lassi, chai are the best there. Never a disappointment.
The food was very good - dosa, thali, vadas, and especially the filter coffee! The chef (s) were very nice and came out and checked on us a few times. I do think that the restaurant is underserving itself - maybe improve the decor a bit and make it a bit more lively. The food is certainly deserving of a better presentation. Would go back there again!
Came back to this restaurant after several years (on Diwali day - based on a good review from a friend) and was very disappointed. This restaurant is time warped and has not kept-up with times! Food, choices, portions and service are below average and is over priced. There are many other South Indian vegetarian restaurants choices / offering competition in this area (that are of lot better quality) on Oak Tree Road (i.e.; Moghul Express, Saravana Bhavan, etc.).LOL, they gave us a so called Diwali sweet (complimentary), which was horrible, stale & a left over.Looking at other reviews, it appears that many diners have expressed similar experiences and as one reviewer pointed out "this restaurant responds ONLY to positive reviews and are not willing to face reality!Although, our over all experience was "MEDIOCRE", have given this review a 3 star rating just to be charitable!
I’m glad we could visit the Swagath Gourmet. The experience was good and food was delicious too.The owners did check on us twice to ensure we are having good time.I’d love to visit.Idly Vada, Dosa(not in picture), Gobi Manchurian and Coffee was absolutely delicious.Cannot wait to go back!
