We were in Portsmouth for a show and selected the Cafe Mediterraneo for dinner before the show. This was clearly an excellent choice! Located across the street from The Music Hall, it was a short walk from our hotel and theatre. I read some of the other reviews and I wonder if they were for the same restaurant. Some of the reviews were critical or downright negative. DON'T BELIEVE them! This establishment was WONDERFUL. We were greeted and quickly seated. All of the staff was extremely friendly and took care of our every need. The menu was extensive and well rounded to give an offering of something for everyone. Well spaced seating but still the small cafe style feeling. If you are in Portsmouth, be sure to stop by Cafe Mediterraneo. You will not be disappointed!
Tonight’s meal & experience were wonderful! Always enjoy the food, and so happy to see the place full again. I also want to thank the hostess Katherine who helped me when I fell as I entered the business. She was wonderful with me! Also, the other hostess came by later to ask me if I needed some Advil. I accepted her offer and thanked her for thinking of it! The very best staff!!! Happy to have had their help!!
My wife and I were dining with a friend and the restaurant was not overly busy on the evening of March 9th as the snow must have kept some patrons home. Our three meals were delivered at the same time and almost immediately our guest found a hair on the top of their entree. It did take some time for us to flag an employee who was going to tell our server, “W”. As we waited for “W”, my wife, and I did not touch our food to respect the situation and our friend. “W”, came to our table after being told that we had an issue and reviewed the plate and said, “the hair must be from one of the guys in the kitchen”. She politely asked, “would you like for us to remake the dish” and our guest said “please”. As frequent diners we understand that this situation does happen, and we are not going to a make a scene out of it. This situation was an inconvenience to our night as my wife and I ate our food while our guest awaits the remake and vice a versa when the remake arrived. “W” said the remake would take a couple of minutes and, it took approximately 10 – 15 minutes although we were not keeping a stopwatch.So here is my peeve. The situation of the hair in the food was never acknowledged again after "W" asked the question about the remake or not. In my experiences with similar situations the server, manager on duty, or even the owner has apologized for the happening and typically would do something to try to make the situation better. Minimally, I believe "W" should have apologized when presenting the check to me. I did not approach the owner who manages the front end of the business as he was hustling meals out of the kitchen most of the night. Maybe I should have approached him regardless as he can’t fix what he does not know is broken. Disappointing evening!

Recently had our daughters bridal shower there. Everything was absolutely perfect! The food is beyond delicious, service is excellent. The owner and staff are wonderful! Highly recommend Cafe Med!!
The food was so delicious! The service was divine. I think my favorite was the bread and oil dip that they serve after you order. Great wine list. The bartender Nick was the best!
Cafe Mediterraneo opens onto Congress St which is in the heart of the downtown and has a great lively Portsmouth vibe (elegant in an understated way)! Their food is very well prepared and presented! The bread and garlic-infused olive oil is like no other. Recommend trying the Calamari or Bruschetta appetizer, and love the Lasagna and Lobster Ravioli entrees -always perfectly seasoned! The owners are always gracious and accommodating which adds measurably to the experience! Could not recommend this restaurant more highly!Incidentally, I, my husband, and son have been dining at this restaurant since it's opening 25 years ago and is absolutely our family's favorite! Enjoy!
The. Restaurant needs to put the heat on. Even the staff commented they need to dress accordingly! The food was good, wait staff not so much. At the end of our meal and the Waitress finally showed up, we asked for coffee and she rolled her eyes and said, ‘well…. I’ll see what I can do…. What kind of a response is that!!?? When the person filling water came over after that, we cancelled the coffee order after waiting quite a while. Would not recommend this place….at least not in the winter and when they are busy!
Went there tonight, food was good, very nice waitress, but the place was very cold, everyone in my section had their coats on. I asked the manager if he could turn the heat up a bit and he said it was fine and looked at me like I had 2 heads. There was a reason everyone had their coat on. Like I said if you want a good meal but dont mind freezing then have at it .
