Open Range is steakhouse in the middle of Main street in downtown Bozeman. The outside appearance fits the bill with a beautiful brick facade equipped with a sign that shows a silhouette of a steer. Inside it is simple, clean and more casual than I expected. In all fairness, downtown Bozeman is a very cool, casual college town. The servers are very friendly and their attire is straight from the 90's with oversize white button down shirts and slightly baggy jeans. I loved it. We ordered cocktails and they were very good and poured well. The menu is simple and easy to navigate. We were a group of 7 and they sat us at a high table with high chairs. We all had the tenderloin, a very popular choice there. It took EXTREMELY long for us to get our food and when it came it was nearly cold. However, the meat was good quality and was still buttery in your mouth considering the temperature. The veggies that accompanied our protein were delicious as well.Ultimately the great service and quality of food overshadowed my long wait and temp of my meal. I also feel that the pricing of the dishes are high for such a casual ambiance and experience.
Found Open Range a bit pretentious! It’s a busy place for sure, and reading other reviews it sounds as though it serves decent food, but in our case we couldn’t get past the feeling that we weren’t “really” that important (we aren’t but we are customers!!) We sat down, waited and left! Not sure we made eye contact with anyone during the entire, albeit short experience.
Being in Montana, compelled us to seek out a nice steak dinner and we landed at Open Range. The dining room is nice, floor tables spread out which I appreciated. We had a reservation (not sure if you need one) and were promptly seated upon our arrival. They had some interesting craft cocktails on the menu, so we started with that. Mark's Old Fashioned & a Party Dress. Both very tasty. They kept our water glasses full which I am very fond of! We split a Caesar salad and both ordered the Waygu sirloin. My friend got hers Diane style, I did the Whiskey Onions and Horseradish. We also ordered the bread service for $6 (skip it, not worth paying the $ for 5 small pieces of unmemorable carbs). The salad was very good, the steaks juicy and delicious. They came with fingerling potatoes (meh, maybe upgrade to one of the other starches?) and carrots. We loved the photo's of all the local Bozeman dogs on the all, like really loved it since we are dog obsessed. Our service was very good and friendly as well.
It was okay. Steak was delicious and perfectly cooked, tender. I was disappointed in the accompaniments, not much choice and they were just okay. Thought it was quite pricey. The evidence was average.
We were excited about this place. Especially since we are on Main Street almost weekly.. Plonk was great, but we wanted to give other restaurants a chance. The place is really nice and the music was a vibe. The hostess was very professional and nice. Or server was good. The appetizers were good. The shrimp was really good. But our main Entrées were cold. We waited patiently for cold food. I didn't want to be fussy, so I ate some of mine asked for a today go. My bf sent his back just to come came with cold food on a hot plate. They didn't remake the food. The food was heated on the plate and smothered with mushroom sauce.. For the prices things really need to be stepped up.. You can't charge upscale prices and serve diner food. Ijs.
Everything about this meal was outstanding for the 3 of us . . . except my expensive steak (price was not the issue) was served apparently after coming off the grill and sitting for far too long to arrive hot. It was nearly cold (still delicious). Server was wonderful overall (although I would have expected management to step in - although my bringing the temperature of the steak to the attention of the server was so the restaurant could address whatever caused the cold steak to be served).
I was hoping for a memorable meal with my son whom I hadn't seen in many months. My ribeye came over cooked and my wife's ribeye was rare when she ordered med-well. They took her steak back and overcooked it on only one side so it came back to us shaped like a soup bowl! Denny's could have done a better job. The brocollini was seared but yet under cooked so it was like eating branches. Food was oversalted. They gave us $20 off my wife's $70 steak. Probably the worst dining experience we've had in years. An unremarkable place for a remarkable cost.
The food as usual was great. However my son and I both ordered the Pastry Porter,(this is a Bourbon barrel aged beer but is not listed as so) neither of us liked it and when we commented to the waiter he shrugged it off. At the end of our meal the manager? asked how we liked the beer, again we said it was not to our liking, too much barrel flavor. He informed us we were wrong as it was his favorite beer in the restaurant. And was not that Bourbony. Oh and "at least it is 11%", not my beer priority.I was a bit disappointed in how this was handled by both. Perhaps the waiter could have offered a different beer? And the manager could have been, at least sympathetic to our issue.
High-class ambiance and very good food in a convenient location. I was told to try this place out as the best steak place in Bozeman, and I can see why. One star was deducted as the bison filet I ordered Medium came to me closer to Medium Well (it was delicious nonetheless) and the service was slow. If I am in Bozeman again, I will probably try another establishment.
Food was over cooked (burnt scallops and overdone crostini), under seasoned (bison tenderloin) and not hot (had probably been sitting under a heat lamp waiting for us to finish burnt scallops).Had a nice vibe inside and service was great. Good wine selection, but will not be back. Not worth the hype. We chose this place because it was highly rated, very disappointed.
