Southern used to be one of my favorite restaurants. It has changed. The menu is different - more like chicken strips instead of actual chicken. The strips were dry. The sides were just ok. Not in any hurry to go back and that is a shame.
I'm a Nashville native and my wife and I move to STL from Nashville in August of this year. The thing we missed most about Nashville was the hot chicken and needless to say there are SLIM pickin's of places that get the job done. In fact, this is the only place in town we've found that comes anywhere close and I'd even go as far to say that it might be better than some places back home. Highly highly recommend.
Southern has consistently good food. Get the Hot - It's spicy but more flavorful than the mild and original flavors. The lime ranch offsets the heat nicely if you are not a big fan of hot things (like me). We almost always get the Family deal and piece on it for 3 days, so it's surprisingly affordable per meal
Used to love Southern! Been craving Them for a while and decided to order lunch after they reopened. First off they didn’t have white meat, only tenders. They were really over cooked, not much breading and zero sauce. Maybe they should have stayed closed until they were able to put good product out again
Takes the crown from Gus' as the best fried chicken in STL.Appreciate that they have different spice levels and that large orders (family pack) can be ordered to different heat levels.Solid sides, but the chicken is the best part.
I am not a fan of chicken ? but this place really makes the difference.

They forgot an item in my order and it has been painful trying to get them to respond to me. They lied to me and said they would reach out to me, it’s been weeks and they have not. To top it off when I originally told them about the mistake on the order on Facebook they ignored me and I had to message again saying I know that they read it to get them to respond. They obviously do not care about their customers at all and I won’t be returning.
We grabbed sides here before the hockey game last weekend. The entire staff was so generous and kind, and went above and beyond. We had the best mac n cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy, and collard greens we've ever had. Absolutely will go back!
So good every time. I love the southern chicken sandwich and the mashed potatoes.
