I live in Soulard and go often- place is lovely. Kind, helpful staff, delicious and decadent food and treats, and their coffee is wonderful. Love the vibe here; music is perfect, people are working and chatting, place is clean and eclectic. My favorite spot for coffee and treats!
Pretty good coffee shop! Loved their space, atmosphere, and their impressive drink menu (even featuring cocktails and specials). Only wish was for more of a wider book selection!!Update: made it 5 stars for their quick responsiveness and feedback!
Being a coffee and book lover, this place has been on my list for over a year now.Went there for the first time and loved the vibe. We had their toffee and basic latte with gluten free choco lava cake. Everything was great. It was mostly quiet and people were focused.Their book collection was very nice across multiple genres.
This coffee shop has a nice selection of preowned books and a good variety of coffee options on the menu. We enjoyed relaxing with our cold brews and perusing through the book selections. I particularly enjoyed browsing through the vintage books. The decor was an added treat for the eyes! I would highly suggest making a stop here, especially on a hot St. Louis summer afternoon.
This is a great little cafe in the heart of Soulard. It has become our regular breakfast place when we visit. On the weekends, they add to their already broad selection with made-to-order breakfast burritos that are as delicious as they are big. Plan for leftovers or to split with someone!
This place was comfy and welcoming. The staff was great. Coffee and savory breakfast pastry were perfect. I had an americano and the Leak and Parmesan pastry. Perfect start to the day.
Stopped by here on my way out of St. Louis. Cozy interior, great menu, and an excellent assortment of used books (some of which you can buy for really good prices!)The owners also have some homemade cards, bookmarks and other items for sale! It's a unique place, and makes for a good stop! If I lived in St. Louis, I'd definitely be a regular here!
As a place to hang out and do some work or read a book, this place has all the ambiance. If I lived nearby, I would probably spend hours in this place but won’t go out of my way for it on a road trip. Unfortunately, the coffees were only so-so. They got better once we stirred them up, and it was pretty busy that day. The baristas were really nice and on top of getting our orders out.

I absolutely loved coming here, i came to the protagonist cafe after wanting to visit for a while. The coffee there is amazing and the baristas are super super nice! I felt like i could talk to them about anything! The ambiance is amazing, its a great place to quietly socialize or do work. The little shop there is really cool, and i love being able to grab a book off a shelf and just read! The whole place is really cozy, I'll definitely be coming again!
