We went to The Reef soon after it opened a few years ago, well before the pandemic. The food was good, decor was great but the service was not good at all. The owner felt so bad, he comped one of our dinners. So we had not been back until this week. What a difference! Our server Michael was excellent. He was attentive, made us feel welcome and contributed greatly to our wonderful dining experience. We already loved the nautical ambience. Upon a closer look, it was amazing how much of a collector the owner must be to have everything...I mean everything go with the nautical theme. We started with crab cakes which were delicious. Not a bunch of fillers as you often encounter, all yummy crab meat. For mains we ordered trout and salmon. Both were delicious as well as the accompanying garlic potatoes and asparagus. For dessert, cheese cake with strawberry topping that was a wonderful exclamation point for a fine dining experience. We will be going back...probably on a regular basis!
My experience at The Reef was amazing!! Shout out to our waiter, Michael, along with Chef David. The decor, outstanding. The food, I cannot brag about enough. I had co workers see my pictures, and were thirsty for this place I discovered. Food and drink were served quickly, with our first mate Michael constantly checking in. The ambiance was romantic, unlike your every day Long John Silvers. The worst part? Not being able to go every day. I plan to have my half birthday, God Given birthday, dog's birthday, any holiday celebrated at this place, in the Captain's Room of course. 10/10 would recommend.
I had dinner hear with a colleague while in the area for a work meeting. What a great dinner! Very fresh fish, nice salads and interesting decor! I would highly recommend. I also accidentally left my credit card here and they were nice enough to mail back
There are no great options in Kansas City North for a locally owned sea food restaurant. So, we went to The Reef soon after it opened a few years ago, well before the pandemic. Totally Groovy ChowHall? This place could be mistaken for a pirate cove or a museum.. Need more time to inspect the premises, just a Ton of Great Ocean Decor ??Swordfish was Outstanding, veggies could have cooked a bit more. Fine line between crispy and undercooked?Staff were decent, just slow considering 20% occupancy. Will be back for another Experience ?☠️ ✌️
Wow doesn't begin to describe it. The service was extremely pleasant and the food was amazing. I love seafood so I'm always looking for the best. I don't think I've had salmon melt in my mouth like it did here. By far the best clam chowder I've ever had. The chef came out delighted to be open for dine in again after the pandemic. The decor is heavy which I totally love.
Loved the decor and the food was even better. The wait staff were super and the chef even came out to greet us and see how our food was. Lobster and steak were cooked to perfection!! The crab cake appetizers were wonderful.
We had seen this place online. We went for a birthday dinner. 1st, not a big deal but then don't offer anything for birthday's. The reason I gave 2 stars and not 1 is because the decor is pretty cool here, the waiter was also nice. The place was very dark and the booths right next to us looks like they were bing used as break rooms for the employees. Very cluttered. The worst thing... the food. The food wasn't good at all. The reed has no calamari and for being called the reef, it's seafood selection is seriously lacking. I had trout and it was dry and tasted like it had just been doused with large amount of salt.my wife got the chicken and it didn't look very appealing. It wasn't horrible but honestly tasted boiled. The best thing there was the chicken strips my children ordered. This place was a major let down for the price. You also have to pay extra for salad if you want it. Definitely not worth the price. The decor was cool but the food was lacking in a major way.
The decor is the best thing about this place. Such an amazing, unique restaurant. Unfortunately, that's all that wowed us. We ordered bacon wrapped scallops that were very good for an appetizer. I ordered a $69 plate of steak and lobster tail. My steak came out rare, I had ordered it medium. For the money I asked them to cook it longer. The waiter was super apologetic and when the manager brought it back they said that the chef had apologized, but it was still sorely under cooked. My lobster tail was over cooked, the meat was tough and the shell was brown it had been cooked long enough. My friend still ate the lobster, but I didn't eat the steak at all. When the waiter noticed he apologized again and took the steak. They didn't even offer any compensation for the steak. I was really disappointed in that. For an upscale restaurant, they should know how to make steak and lobster. None of the 4 of us were impressed with the food, which sucks because it is such a cool atmosphere. The manager was steady yelling at all the staff and stomping around like an ogre. Maybe it was just an off night, but we won't know because we won't be back. It was not worth the money spent.
I recently did a park/fly package at a hotel and their restaurant's options were yuck...so drove a couple miles down the road to the Reef. How delightful! The atmosphere and decor were "reefy" certainly with polynesian music playing and nicely set tables & booths. Had expected more seafood options from the name but what they had was quite nice as well as all the beef/steak options. That night they featured fresh Blue Point oysters which were delectable. And rainbow trout. I opted for the lemon butter preparation with a choice of 2 sides. The trout could not have been any better! Chef David made a circuit around the tables and was also a delight to speak with and discuss the menu and his Navy service. SO...this is one of the few north KC restaurants I would highly recommend.
