Customer service - TRASH! Well the lady that greet us was nice but the cashier/server whatever her position is was rude as hell. Screaming at customers, didn’t even acknowledge us after we stood there for over ten minutes. We were visiting from out of town and took a Uber there- what a waste! Decided to Uber to another restaurant. So disappointing.
I came here for a late lunch. I got a Combo Double-Decker with Fries. In terms in a BBQ sandwich, this is the best one I have had in a while. The meat was perfect. Not too much BBQ sauce on it, but enough to know it was there. The fries were perfectly cooked. I will have to come back!
On my BBQ Tour of Kansas City, this was my 2nd Stop after Arthur Bryant's and while it was good it wasn't as good as Arthur Bryant's to me. I got the Burnt Ends sandwich and that is my point of comparison. it was okay - I just preferred Arthur Bryant's. The difference is that Gates shreds the Burnt Ends as if it was pulled pork. It tasted pretty good but I prefer the other style. I still recommend this place for the history and the food is good.
Delicious food! We were not aware it was cafeteria style serving and they are yelling as soon as you come in. Pay attention. Not the friendliest to newbies, but eh, we quickly feel into place. We personally thought the sauce was heavy and could not taste the flavor of the meat, disappointing. It was better once we took some sauce off. I suppose we could ask for light sauce. Multiple room seating area, each decorated pretty cool. We will go and try it again.
Ordered the short and long rib platters. Same as usual ribs very tender. Ample amounts of food friendly line servicersRoom attendant did a good job refilling drinks napkins and sauces. It was great to see Mr Gates there. Amazing for someone in his 80's. Still doing what he must enjoy. Keep up the good work. Not a 5 star. Rating. The potatoes salad tasted terrible.. but everything else was palette delicious..
Man, what happened? The worst BBQ I’ve had in KC. The ribs dried out, burnt ends dried out covered in gloppy sauce. Brisket dried out. If you don’t have good meat why bother selling it? Close the door and tell your customers to come back later. Blame it on bad management. So many excellent bbq joints in KC. Lost my vote blnt.
Absolutely wonderful. It's been awhile since have been here. Moved to Northern Minnesota and we used to come here all of the time. We got the Large platter and it fed all 7 and we had leftovers to take back to hotel. Thank you so much Gates!
They say the don't let you see your food before you buy because of covid. So when I opened my mixed plate, burnt fries, burnt ribs, no sauce. The only thing that was fresh was the pickles the put in the box. Terrible service.
There are a lot of good barbecue restaurants in Kansas City. Gates is one of my favorites. Yum the turkey and beef are my favorites. The ribs and sausage or the bomb. Sides are good and service is good. Good place to go while in KCMO. Don’t forget the sauce! It’s worth the trip.
My wife didnt like the food but I thought it was pretty good.
