Just felt let down for this being such a historic place. Part of the fun is looking at the ice cream flavors but they are covered up and to the side. Just felt like it could be so much more.
Great place to cool down. Employees were very courteous and welcoming. Outside was a gigantic water bowl for dogs and our dog was invited in and offered a pup cup on the house while we had our usual waffle cone. While inside we checked out all the historical president Truman items and had a very nice break from the heat on our visit to the square.
While on a recent visit to Independence with my 93 year-old father, we toured the amazing Truman’s Museum and Library. Afterwards, we decided to visit nearby Clinton’s Soda Fountain. As afternoon temperatures had soared to the mid-90’s, the anticipation of a frosty ice cream sundae or phosphate soda was truly enticing! Alas, we were never able to partake of these delights, due to a 6” step at the entrance of the building. My dad’s mobility scooter was not able to clear that small step, and so sadly, we had to turn away. The young girl at the counter kindly offered to prepare our order and serve it to us outside, but he needed to be in an air-conditioned space. It’s kind of ironic, really- I’d imagine that a good many of the people still alive today who would remember something similar to the old-fashioned fountain at Clinton’s may also require the use of a mobility device. Please consider modifying that barrier, so more people can access the building and enjoy a visit here!
This is a great place to stop by for refreshments (the menu is focused more on dessert than lunch). Very friendly and neighborly service, and the ice cream sundae was terrific. They don't make them like this anymore!
The ladies working there were so nice! It's nice to have good customer service for once, it's very rare these days! It was the best ice cream I've ever had!
Love going to this place. It's like home when you go there. Sadly I had little choices since I just found out I'm lactose intolerant. But still going in for the nostalgia.
Always delicious! I've loved this place since I was a kid and it's still awesome.
This is pretty much a must stop while touring the square. The authentic vintage fountain is beautiful, and we made it a point to sit at the fountain rather then at the tables in the rear of the building. Young Harry Truman once worked here scooping out the flavors. Our sundaes were good: I had the Nutty Turtle - Butter Pecan ice cream, and my wife chose "Harry's favorite" - chocolate ice cream with butterscotch. We also enjoyed the bottled Polly Pop sodas, a local favorite. Service was a little slow as the two servers were somewhat taxed by the patrons, as one was still apparently in training. Go for the experience!
We really wanted to like this place. The mural outside is cute. The old hanging soda fountain sign is cute and the exterior of the building makes you thing something cool is inside. Well, there isn’t. The menu is unimaginative and basic. The shop is cute or charming but looks cluttered and like it is a storage room with old booths crammed in. There is a lot of kitschy stuff for sale that doesn’t have anything to do with the shop. The merchandise is shoved in a cherry wood colored display facing the bar. It is so out of place and has stun glass doors on either end. It is awkward.
So let me start off by saying, my family did like the Sundae. We would probably go back. With that said here is the good, the ok, and the bad.Let’s start with what was bad. The place had the smell of cat litter. If you like the smell of a litter bag then it is great. Also the service was slow. It took about 15 minutes to get our Sundaes and there were only two people ahead of us in line.On to the ok. They seem to be using blue bell ice cream. It isn’t fresh ice cream, but not bad.Now for the good. They gave a lot of toppings. The flavor of the chocolate fudge was very great. On top of that they gave a good size of ice cream. In the end there was enough toppings that you could have them with each bit.
