I ordered the kampai roll, which was tasty, but it was 12 bucks for 6 pieces of mostly rice. I was hoping there would be more tuna on top. My boyfriend got the ramen which was good, but tasted like they dumped a bucket of salt in the bowl. The brussel sprouts appetizer was amazing, I will give them that. In my opinion, it's not worth the money. I tried it because of the great reviews, but I probably won't go back.
If I could rate 20 stars, I would. It was my first time at a real sushi restaurant and I was not disappointed. It being a literal hole in the wall was interesting, but added to its charm because once you go inside the restaurant is BEAUTIFUL. The decor is great, the service is fantastic and friendly and the food is amazing. The sushi was fantastic (I got the Rainbow roll), and the fried scallops appetizer was just as great! It was a little pricey, but worth every single penny. I will definitely be going again.
Nice outdoor seating. Had gluten free options and gluten free soy sauce. I have celiac and it was safe for me.
One of my hobbies is discovering new and exciting foods, and Kampai definitely fit that need. Hod kalamari for the first time, and they did it right. The noodles were good, too. A bit pricey but worth it. The server is outstanding!
TLDR at the endWhen it comes to Japanese restaurants I feel confident enough to say that I have a good understanding of what you get vs what you pay, and the expectations that come with each. When talking about Kampai, I feel the balance is skewed in the direction of you pay much more for not much more food.I went here with my brother a nice night out, walking in the atmosphere was very much alive and vibrant, lights and Japanese adornments decorated the walls and ceilings while an appropriately selected music track played in the background. After looking over the menu for a few minutes, I selected the fried gyoza as my appetizer, and a California roll and Shrimp Tempura roll as my main course.I didn't have to wait long, perhaps 20 mins or so, until my gyoza arrived, it was hot and crunchy as I hoped, and the accompanying sauce added a small bit of spice that was appreciated.A few minutes later my main dish arrived. The meal itself was not much different than anything else you'd see at any other sushi restaurant, I will add however that the California roll did come topped with smelt roe, which, while not mentioned on the menu, or usually served on California rolls, was a nice addition. Both rolls tasted alright, nothing else was especially notable or particularly memorable. However, I have yet to talk about the price. The rolls were $10 each, with the gyoza being 7. I was quite suprised when I first saw the price, surely that couldn't be right, $10 for a California roll? But no, that was the correct price, and when it arrived there were only 8 rolls to be seen, so that's 1.25 a roll. There's nothing wrong with charging such a price, and the owners are free to do as such, but for what I received, it didn't meet my expectations as to what a $10 California should be. And the same goes with the shrimp. The whole time, I was thinking of how just down the street, I could get the same meal for 9 dollars less at Geshia Sushi(if that they were open on Sundays)TLDRThe atmosphere is nice,The food is alright, not amazingThe prices are expensive for what you get.
Amazing service and even better food and cocktails!
This place has a very interesting smoked pork and cracked black pepper Ramen that was really great. Very complicated and smoky flavor with crispy pork bits and plenty of noods. Great sake selection and Japanese beer on tap. Warm and trendy atmosphere. Lots of attractive people eat here.
Great spot for date night. The atmosphere is nice and relaxed, server was great, and food was tasty. My date and I loved the Incrediroll. The geisha martini was also delicious!
Best gourmet sushi and entres in town!
Absolutely love this place. Best sushi my and my boyfriend have ever had. Every time we go there, there is great service, an amazing food and wonderful atmosphere. When we go we order the amazing steam gyoza and lots of sushi. More on the expensive side but worth it. It's in the alley so it can take a digging to find on Google maps but once you do you will not regret it.
