We were in Oxford last month, touring the campus with our upcoming high school senior. It was so great to eat at Ajax again! My brother went to Ole Miss years ago, and I've often talked about the area restaurants. Specifically the home cooking & ambiance that is Ajax. So it was fantastic to finally get to bring my husband & son. The food didn't disappoint. I got the turkey & dressing, which was super tender. The broccoli rice casserole is definitely a fave. And the banana pudding. Yum! If you are in the area, you really need to check them out. I'm so happy they are still there. Looking forward to more visits in the future!
First time and ordered the country fried steak. It was good not awesome but decent. The steamed broccoli however was hard as a rock and cold.the sweet potato casserole was really good as were the mashed potato with cream gravy. Will definitely be back excellent prices for the meal as well.
Seat yourself, quick professional service, a great place for locals & those traveling, on the square- so very convenient, delicious southern food and very reasonably priced! Would definitely return!!
Southern hospitality at its FINEST! I Ordered the country fried steak, mashed potatoes, squash casserole and cornbread with a delicious glass of southern sweet tea. EVERYTHING was AMAZING. I will definitely be returning. Sooooo delicious.... Received excellent service from my waitress and staff.
Vegetarians rejoice! The veggie plate is absolutely incredible with good options - There is an option for everyone in your family - service is always incredible, people are friendly. You feel good about frequenting this business
What a joke! Came highly recommended. Waited to be served and waited then waited some more on a Wednesday evening with few customers. We eventually walked out. The help wanted signs should have been a warning. Too many better choices on the square.
Ajax Diner offered an incredible experience during me and my wife’s recent trip to Oxford. She got the fried pickles and hashbrown casserole. I had the hot tamale pie with slaw and fries. Everything was top notch. I’d never had tamale pie, but it’s a safe bet I’ll be returning for this unique dish. The slaw was crunchy and just sweet enough, and the fries were as crisp as could be. My wife loves hashbrown casserole, and she finished every bite with a smile. The only slight downfall was the fried pickles, which were fried perfectly, but had a bit too much salt. We still ate them all, because the fry was so spot-on. It was a slow, quiet afternoon, and our waitress gave us a ton of attention and care. Easily earns a high recommendation. Can’t wait to go back.
This place does things differently. They have AC. I'm not saying that's what makes them different. What makes them stand out is that they advertise their AC. Their front door says, "air conditioned". I'd hope that most restaurants have AC, but I guess you can never be too sure. When I was eating here, I noticed myself focusing on the AC more than usual. Honestly, I think Ajax Diner has better AC than most other restaurants. I wish more restaurants advertised the basics. Ajax Diner should take it a step further and advertise how they have drinkable water and chairs for sitting. If a restaurant advertised only their AC, water, and chairs in a commercial, I'd 100% try that place. Anyway, that's not the only thing this place does differently. They also served our food before our drinks, which I kind of preferred. It makes sense to get some food in your stomach before you start boozing. Ajax Diner was looking out for us. Overall, my friend and I had a great time. The food was delicious and the AC was world class.
Amazing service. The food was delicious. I got the country fried steak with white gravy, squash casserole, cornbread dressing and a piece of the jalapeno cornbread. Will definitely eat here again when in Oxford!
Amazing food and service! We tried the Ham steak, Meatloaf & Chicken fried steak. Some of the best we've ever had.
