I read about Hal and Mal's in Jill Conner Browne's Sweet Potato Queens books. Of course while I was passing through Jackson on the Natchez Trace, I had to go there and see for myself. The restaurant was everything I thought it would be. The food was great and I finally got to taste that famous Comeback Sauce. The service was good and the atmosphere was great.
Super interesting blues themed restaurant with wonderful friendly staff. Loved the gumbo!
It was really nice experience I thought the staff was very polite this gentleman greeting me with a warm welcome. I had visit years ago with family but could find my way back because I'm not familiar with the down town areas. I wanted Pinto beans but they no longer on the menu the gentleman said they were famous for Redbean rice but I chose the special potatoes/roast beef, green and blackeye peas it's was delicious atmosphere was extremely pleasant.
I fell in love with the this venue the atmosphere was so welcoming the service was excellent and the music oh my God the band out of this world I am so looking forward to going back yes I would say that this venue has a 5-star status in my world
We walked around downtown Jackson earlier in the day and were generally underwhelmed. Luckily a chance comment from our server at breakfast led us to head back into town later and we ended up at Hal & Mals. We were in the mood for music and Tuesday night Jazz here proved to be just the ticket, along with great food ( best value on our trip so far) and a great atmosphere. Off to Natchez tomorrow, otherwise we would be back for another great night at Hal & Mals.
The gumbo was so good! I had to complement the chef! I had went with a bunch of Veterans from around the country to learn horsemanship in Jackson. Our hostess was so friendly and helpful!
We had the absolute worst service there the other night. We ordered our drinks TWICE. The waitress actually came over after the first order as if we never ordered. We told her again. I had to go to the bar after 40 minutes and ask for them. Someone else had to get our food order. I could have killed my husband for giving her a tip. Shedoesn't need to be a waitress. And let me add that I am always a good tipper. If isn't mediocre food, it's bad service.
The food was pretty good. We got there at a quiet time, so service could have been better with very few customers. I'll be back for sure.
