I went here on a food tourist mission. The "Walleye with Ginger and Scallions" dish was featured on the show "Best Thing I Ever Ate", season 8 episode 11, recommended by Alex Guarnaschelli, and I wanted to see it for myself. First of all, there is some weirdness about this dish being on that show, because that episode was specifically called "Serious Spice", but this is not a spicy dish at all. It's just bizarre to me that this dish was shoehorned into this episode where it did not belong. The other strange thing to me is that, unfortunately, while this was a good meal, it is nowhere near the "best thing I ever ate". This is not a fine dining restaurant, it's basically just a regular Chinese place. If you want to go, you won't have to worry about a dress code or needing a reservation to get a table. I'd be surprised if they even take reservations. First impressions first - I entered and saw a sign stating that the hostess will seat me. I waited for a moment while the gentleman seated near the door refused to look up from his phone. He mumbled something to me that I didn't catch - I think he was asking me if I was picking up an order. I said I wanted to be seated, and he mumbled something else. Basically what was going on was that the "host" was mumbling at people who waited to be seated that they should grab their own menus and go sit wherever, all the while refusing to look up from his phone. I ordered a quail appetizer that was really good - in my opinion it was better than the dish that was featured on the show. I ordered a soda, which came in a can and was accompanied by a glass with ice. The dish I came to eat - the Walleye with Ginger and Scallions - was very well represented on the show. The dish I received was the exact dish as it was prepared on the episode of "Best Thing I Ever Ate". And it was pretty good. As I said before it's not anywhere near close to the best thing I ever ate.. and it was not spicy at all despite being on the Serious Spice episode, but I did not regret ordering it. What I am kind of bummed about was that ordering that dish meant that I didn't order any of many other delicious looking other dishes on their menu. I can't say I wouldn't go back, but I also can't say that I'd search it out with the entirety of Minneapolis restaurants to choose from. And if I ever did find myself here again, I definitely would not order the walleye again - there were many other interesting looking dishes on the menu. In all honesty, this made me question Alex Guarnaschelli's recommendations to the point that I cancelled plans to visit another Minneapolis place that she recommended.
Usually good food, but gave me gluten when I EXPLICITLY asked for gluten free food :( The server agreed and had assured me it would be gluten free. I want to love them but I am in a ton of pain and nausea right now because of this mistake. Their food is good and prices are fair but this experience really disappointed me and could have been VERY dangerous if it happened to a more severe food sensitivity or allergy. Please, please if the restaurant reads this, make a more strict policy for gluten free food so this doesn't happen to anyone else. Can't risk eating here anymore after that so I am quite disappointed. I am torn because the food is yummy and fairly priced but this mistake is just a bit too much for me- food sensitivities and allergies beware here.
First time here. Service was friendly and food was brought out very fast, very tasty!!
Consistency is important for me when I like a place. I started going when I was an undergrad in college and after 20+ years I’m still grateful it tastes the same -DELICIOUS. Authentic chinese menu is available besides the egg fu young and chow mein dishes. I do love their egg fu young and the gravy that comes. It’s so good. If you’re expecting good service it’s hit or miss, but you’re not dining at a fancy place. You want excellent service you go to a 5 star Michelin restaurant. They’re friendly and will get you what you order, please don’t review their service because honestly I’m Asian and I don’t get special treatment. I like that it’s clean and pretty fast service and hot food always. Writing this review is making me hungry. Lol Try them out because they won’t disappoint.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this place! Tried the egg rolls, dumplings, and so much more. Everything was out of this world!!! Great flavor and spices in every dish. Service was amazing! Worth a stop in Minneapolis!!!
OMG amazing!! We drive 40 minutes to come to this place - because the food is that good! Orange beef and pan-friend noodles with chicken and vegetables are delicious. Customer service is always exceptional too. And we always manage to get a booth :)
This was the first place I went after I found out I no longer have a severe allergy (or any allergy) to shrimp. I ordered my favorite meal, honey walnut shrimp, and lived up to all of my expectations! Amazing.
Good food, affordable, friendly service. Right here in Scenic Dinkytown!
Got my favs eggplant w/ brown sauce and mock duck w/ mix veg in garlic sauce! Delish!
1st time here and we will be back! Service was excellent, and food was fresh, hot and delicious! 1 problem, so many great choices it was hard to choose (kidding). As I said we'll be back!
