Excellent Japanese-Italian restaurant in the trendy warehouse district of Minneapolis. The non alcoholic drinks are just as creative as the alcoholic drinks. The tempura calamari is excellent to start with and the yakitori is a great small plate. We thoroughly enjoyed two different wood fired pizzas. The restaurant has limited seating so I recommend making a reservation. Even sitting at the bar is a treat at this innovative restaurant.
Had an absolutely incredible experience at Sanjusan, it has become one of my favorite spots in the Twin Cities! Some friends and I had came in to celebrate a birthday and found the staff to be extremely polite and very accommodating! The food was absolutely delectable, I started off with the yakitori (Japanese grilled chicken) and the arancini rice balls (enoki filled rice balls with togarashi furikake spice and onsen egg). The main course was the Squid ink Pappardelle which tasted very fresh and was very filling! Lastly, we ordered the green tea caramel flan for dessert which came with diced apple and an apple cider sauce on top which was a perfect balance of sweetness and tartness. Highly highly recommend checking out this restaurant, the ambiance was also quite nice!
A 21% service charge that isn't gratuity is unacceptable. lolol.
A couple weeks ago, I didn't know Sanjusan existed, but after dining here last night, I'm recommending it to everyone! After a short elevator ride up to the 4th floor, the doors open to an exclusive private dining space for larger parties (6+). Even with being disconnected from the main part of the restaurant, the service doesn't miss a beat.We started with a variety of cocktails. The garnishes ranged from a blossom of seaweed to a cloud of cotton candy. Slightly extra, but very creative! As we transitioned to appetizers, our waiter Austin helped guide us towards some delicious starters along with the mains that followed. He was attentive and knowledgeable throughout the night, and made the experience wonderful! The whole concept of Italian-Japanese fusion seemed strange at first, but it worked! Definitely recommend.
Food was god tier.Let me begin by saying I DISLIKE eggplants in food with a fiery passion (ask my girlfriend). We had the eggplant katsu and arancini for starters. The salad that came with the eggplant katsu had bulldog mayo as the dressing, which was unexpectedly god tier. And the eggplant katsu was good too! For our main course we had mentaiko. Let me say this is probably one of the tastiest things I've ever had. I DIED and my girlfriend had to shake me a few times to get me to snap back to reality. We also got a pizza with miso pesto in it, which didn't have a whole lot of the miso taste to it BUT it was still really good. Oh and the drinks were great too!!Foods we had ranked (they were all good):1) Mentaiko2) God tier salad with the eggplant katsu3) Miso pesto pizza4) AranciniFood: god tierEnvironment: god tier, the bar upstairs adds more to the experience (it is a Japanese whiskey bar).Pricing: for the experience and taste, it was worth it.Overall: 5 out of 5 arancinis
Great choice for a special date! This place met all expectations and then some. The drinks were beautiful and tasty, and we didn’t speak through eating, just made noises of approval as it was too good to speak through! And our dessert came with a smidge of dessert wine for celebrating a birthday. The staff was lovely as well, but they don’t have a tip section on the tab so be sure to bring some cash to tip! $10 valet was worth it in also getting a nail recommendation from the driver! Overall great evening here! Can’t wait to try all their sister restaurants
The food was absolutely five stars, these chefs clearly know what they're doing. A lot of the food was spicy, and there were several Latino inspired seasonings and even dishes, so it's a little bit more than a Japanese and Italian fusion restaurant (which is fantastic in my opinion). The small plates are where the real value is at, the pastas were great but personally I would stick with the small plates next time.
Everything was just fantastic, from the carpaccio to the squid ink pasta, and the simple margarita pizza is just done perfectly. The cocktails were wonderful too. What really made our experience was Chef Peter, he was so passionate about the food and clearly loves working here. Will be back, for sure!
Sanjusan cleverly marries the flavors and textures of Japanese cuisine with classic Italian dishes in a vibrant, chic setting. The food is inventive and tasty and, as is the case with every Daniel Del Prado concept, the cocktail program is excellent. The standout dishes were the arancini coated in Furikake and served alongside enoki and a silky, barely set egg, as well as the pork gyoza with wood ear mushroom and foie gras which was bursting with complex umami flavors. The Yakitori was also excellent, however the skewers need to be served and eaten right away (before they get cold), which is difficult to manage logistically if you are seated at a table instead of the counter facing the kitchen.Overall I’d highly recommend Sanjusan if you are interested in playful fusion cuisine or Japanese food in general. The gorgeous design of the restaurant and the friendly service make this spot an excellent place for a special occasion dinner or a date night.
It was pretty good. I loved my food. My pizza had bagna cauda which had anchovies so that was little unique. The tuna pizza was better. All the apps were very good.
