Ice Cream Shop Ice Cream

First of all, I love this place. It's been a tradition every time I visit Duluth. I haven't been up since 2008 so I was very pleased to see it still up and running! I did see others with ice cream around Canal Park but only got around to stopping by on Sunday evening (7/10). It was closed. I checked the hours and according to Google, the Boxcar's hours were 12-8. It was barely 7:30 and I could see employees still inside. Not a huge deal, maybe they ran out of stock? Shrugged it off, figured I could grab some before I left the next day. Monday was rainy in the morning, but it did clear up and so around 12:30 I stopped by. Still closed. I went into Grandma's Saloon and asked the hosts if they knew what time the Boxcar would be open. They said the hours were 12-8, and didn't know why it wouldn't be open as it was after noon. Other people were wondering the same thing and were disappointed it was closed. A group of us still wanted ice cream and ended up giving our business to Love Creamery Canal Park. The ice cream there was good, but I would have preferred the classic Boxcar ice cream.Maybe there was an emergency and the employee working the Boxcar had to take a personal day. I'm perfectly ok with that, totally understandable. But with it closed early one day and late the next, maybe update the hours on Google or at least have a sign in the window?

Ice cream is good but the teenagers working need to work. Get off your phone’s when theres 20 people in line and stop eating icecream and food infront of customers thats not cleanly. I waited 10 minutes after ordering for 1 single cone. I didn’t get it until i spoke up. Horrible service but the ice cream tasted good.

We normally like going here but this time not so much. I ordered meat loaf and it really was very good. Seemed like it was pressed meat, weird consistency. Wasn't what we remembered from previous visits.

Best coney around!

This is the restaurant, not ice cream shop. We arrived just before closing (8:30!!) but the staff was very nice about finding us a table separate form others (the patio was closed except for weekends, and this was Labor Day—but pretty empty, go figure!). Our waitress was very pleasant and helped us decide on beers and food. The smaller size portion of the pasta dishes, one with mushroom and vegetable sauce and the other with Cajon chicken both of which turned out to be big enough, and tasty. Even though we basically closed the place, the staff was very nice about it and did not rush us.

Wouldn’t go back here even if they were giving food away for free! Hotdogs were terrible, my kids wouldn’t even eat them. Daughter found hair in her ice cream. Awful awful experience and way overpriced for what it is.

The place was busy, a lot of people getting ice cream. Friendly staff. limited menu but that was ok. The girl even asked before I ordered if I would like a pup cup for my dog. So thoughtful. I will stop in again.

Quick service, employees were very responsive and helpful, portions were VERY generous.

So I'm giving this a four because the ice cream is good but THE HOURS are not 24. From the person running the register "We open at noon and then I think we close at 8 but depending on how busy it is we might be open longer. We really don't have a close time." I asked this on a Saturday so with that in mind enjoy! I added two photos of single scoops one in cone and one in cup. The kids cup is one scoop of ice cream.
