I really wanted to like this place. The owner was really sweet and says “welcome home” when you come in. The down side is the most important part. The drinks. Soooooo syrupy sweet. I can’t put my finger on what the overpowering flavor in each drink was-maybe honey- but the concoctions were less than tasty. Syrupy sweet, actually. My moscow mule inspired drink tasted like grenadine, honey, and maybe some ginger ale. My hubs ordered their version of an old fashioned. It was nothing like it. So sweet, purple, and soooo much grenadine in it. It would probably be better if there was not a traditional cocktail equivalent listed for the drinks, as they tasted nothing like them. The ambience is unique. It is housed in a large pole barn with a curtain dividing the seating area from wherever was behind the curtain. There was a large dragon head and neck beside the stage, the display cases with essential oils, soaps and a helmet for a knight’s armor (if that’s what you call it), and open mic night with an instrumental flare. It was an eclectic gathering of everything. I am only leaving this review because I feel like Google’s 4.9 is much too high for this place, and would hate for more people to get sucked in by a quick google search of Kalamazoo distilleries and think you were getting semi traditional drinks- and the environment leaves something to be desired. (Partially our fault for not doing more research on what their drink specialty was). If you love Viking/all things mid-evil, honey, sweet drinks, and popcorn with 18 flavors of powder to sprinkle over the top, this is your place. Maybe even if you like “meads”? If you are looking for craft cocktails that are using more traditional spirits, try somewhere else.
Welcome home!Make a friend, share a laugh, have a drink! What a great spot! They had comedy night tonight it was fantastic. The mead was perfect and I even got to end the night with a little frozen drink to beat the heat! 10/10 would recommend!
One of my most Favorite places!!! The drinks are amazing and the staff is fantastic! Try one of their Mead tales, straight mead or non alcoholic Bifrost sodas trust me anything is good. They do not serve food but are a BYOF establishment!
We love this place and the people that make it possible!! Absolutely delicious mead, always a variety of specials, great merchandise for display/purchase, fantastic people all around. If you have not stopped by, you’re missing out on the best gem in Kalamazoo.
The people that work there are very friendly. Super chill place to relax and have a drink. The meads are amazing and they offer several beers and nice cocktails
This place was great!!! I grew up in Kalamazoo and I was visiting for New Years. I love how they want to know what you like to drink so they can help you pick out a mead you will love. The Holy Grail was my favorite!
Amazing mead, interesting and innovative mixed drinks (try the Saga), and a wholesome and welcoming staff make this my favorite place to imbibe. Be sure to chit chat with Tom (the owner), he's funny and has some great stories to tell.I have a feeling this place is going to blow up in popularity once they move downtown, and it's totally deserved. If you're sick of the craft beer scene and want to try something new give Valhalla a shot!
My husband and I are new to the area and needed to find a new regular spot. As pagans we were interested by the name and of corse, the mead!We were instantly welcomed by the owner and made to feel welcome as if we’d been there as regulars. The mead was fantastic, especially the Holy Grail. Everyone is so friendly, I totally recommend and will be back again!
I've been looking for something to match the mead I had in Ireland for several years, not too sweet, not too dry, with just the right kick. They were able to help me out immediately! They let me try a number of things to find the other flavors I needed, and matched me with exactly what I was searching for. They were also very kind and welcoming, and provided pleasant and informative conversation. They told me all about their events, which I wholeheartedly recommend, and look forward to joining.Showed me their other wares, which are unique and an exciting find. Including dnd items, jewelry, beard beads, and a number of other handsome items.Very happy I took a chance to peek in, and am eager to go back!!
This place is amazing. The trivia events they do are a lot of fun and the drinks are amazing. The inside has more of a rustic feel than a Viking place, but the staff are super friendly and helpful with anything you could want.
