MeXo is my downtown Grand Rapids favorite. The food is unique and delicious, while the service is always top-notch. The atmosphere is relaxed and fun. While I'm not vegetarian or vegan, it's also been a great place to take friends who need those options, and their vegan options are also delicious for everyone. I highly recommend.
The waitress brought things we did not order and then did not take them off the bill. Everything was way to salty and very expensive. It also claimed to be pre Hispanic Mexican yet they had French toast on the menu....overall it was an expensive outing with poor service and salty food.
This restaurant epitomizes that old Billy Crystal line from Saturday Night Live, “it’s better to look good than to feel good.” The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated and the menu itself looks quite appealing. That’s where the good aspects of this restaurant end. To begin with their chips are not home made, it is quite obvious they came straight out of s bag. There were actually 6 of us seated at a large table and we were brought one small basket for the table to share. When I asked for a second basket of chips the server actually refused, even when I offered to pay for them. Service was extremely slow, it took 15 minutes just to get water for the table. While the descriptions of the meals on the menu conjure up images of an authentic Mexican meal straight from the DF the execution of the food is just not there. The cilantro rice was very undercooked (prior to this I have never eaten crunchy rice). The escabeche vegetables were also raw (typically you cook the vegetables until soft before pickling) while the brisket for the Mole Negro Falda Ahumada was overcooked and tasted like a leather shoe sole. I’m not sure what Chef Oscar is thinking serving such underwhelming food and compounding it with horrible service. As someone who has traveled to pretty much every state in Mexico and sampled cuisine from every corner of the nation this restaurant does Mexican food as a whole an incredible disservice. There is no substance behind the imagery put up, and to be quite honest the only returning customers are probably those that don’t know any better.
MeXo was great, food and service! My only complaint would be to add some more to the patio to make it more of an atmosphere. Iâd definitely go back :)
Wanted to love this so badly! Clearly high quality ingredients but for the price points, it just didnât meet the mark. Service and ambiance were only OK and portions were VERY small. While the plating was beautiful, the brisket was almost inedible it was so tough and the cochinita pibil was almost appetizer sized. If Iâm paying $30/plate and we have multiple appetizers on the table, I donât want to leave hungry and I absolutely did.
This was our second visit to Mexo. Once again the food was great and service too. Plenty of diners in the restaurant, but not too noisy for conversation.
Our server Cindy was absolutely fabulous!! Food was equally fabulous!!
Good food. Good service
Food, service and ambience were all very good. The only downfall was a family dining near us that made no attempt to parent their child. The kid was maybe 4 years old or so and was yelling, screaming, talking very loudly, banging his silverware on the table repeatedly, and running around the restaurant that was otherwise very quiet. None of which I would hold the restaurant accountable for. Weâll definitely go back though as the food was very good. The Enchiladas Rojas were some of the most flavorful Iâve had and my husband said the Baja tacos were second only to some he had years ago in Mexico on a business trip.
Unique take on prehispanic Mexican food Great Artwork and great modern yet comfortable decor. Food was very tasty and the prices were reasonable. I would suggest the carnitas tacos.
