Always fantastic! Great food, great portions...

very large portions. Loud inside but great good!

great staff, the food was absolutely great!!!!

My daughter just moved to Rockport and we are looking for our next favorite restaurant. Tuesday 5/31/22 I found Causeway Restaurant on Essex Avenue in Gloucester and decided to try it. I ordered baked haddock. The girl told me it comes with mashed potatoes and asparagus. I picked up my order at 12:30p.m an hour after they opened. It should be fresh right? First of all the service is very poor, not at all friendly, i didn’t feel welcomed at all. I took my lunch to go. No napkins, plastic utensils or even tartar sauce. (I had driven away and had to turn back) No mashed potatoes like the girl told me. It was a small shriveled baked potato that was hard. The haddock had no flavor at all, as if they just threw some plain breadcrumbs on it and baked it without any condiments. The tartar sauce was yellow and tasted nothing like tartar sauce, just mayonnaise Bottom line? I don’t recommend this place! Go find yourself a better place where they appreciate when you come in to give them your business and hopefully offer you tasty food.

The Causeway was super busy when we arrived. They told us it would be 15-20 minutes. We were only seated after 50 minutes. We started with fried calamari which was tasty but slightly undercooked and the breading easily fell off. My wife's grilled salmon was overcooked - flavorful though. My son had shrimp scampi which was great. I had the scallop and shrimp marinara - way undercooked! Both shrimp and scallops were still translucent. The pasta was soupy. I couldn't eat it but my wife polished off many of my scallops regardless. Our waitress was so busy I didn't have the heart to complain. I brought it home and finished cooking it the following day.Loved their policy concerning alcohol and their generous portions.I suspect our experience was an anomaly and may try again.

This place is fantastic! Its a small, hole-in-the-wall, kind of local place and the food is amazing. I love clam chowder and have had it everywhere from Boston to San Francisco and this place us the best clam chowder I have found. Its rich, creamy and full of clams. The portion sizes are huge, so keep that in mind when you order. After a cup (which was more of a bowl at other places) i couldnt finish my main meal, but its fine as I took it home for later. You cannot go wrong here. I would highly recommend it.

but you need to be careful and assume you will bring food home. My mom used to say: "your eyes are bigger than your stomach". the solution is not to order too much and be willing to share. the famous chowder for example is quite heavy and a cup is more than enough and then share one entree,

I'm torn between 4 and 5 stars. The food was very good, but the portion size is just too big. Especially if you're just visiting the area for a day and don't want to deal with leftovers. Each meal is big enough to feed at least 2 people comfortably.

The service was fantastic, and the portions were MASSIVE. The price was high, but with the amount of food you get, it's kind of hard to complain. The fried food tended to all taste the same to me, but their fish chowder was fantastic, and their tartar sauce was life changing. My wife and I actually had to leave in a hurry as she wasn't feeling well (we had just gotten off a 9 hour boat ride), and the staff was very understanding and helped us get out of there as soon as possible.

Amazing service, great quality large portions
