The highly praised soup dumpling it's very second class, I feel sad about those people who take their friend to experience authentic Chinese food. This is no way close to authentic Taiwanese food. The soup dumpling wrapping is way below average, only the filling is half decent.Oh all the dishes is nowhere close to where they should be, you can tell the chef is in rushed to make those dishes, not worth the time and effort and the way for a visit
The star of the show here is the soup dumplings, which are big, flavorful, and a joy to eat! I came in around 5pm on a Tuesday as a solo diner and was seated immediately; plenty of empty tables, though there were a decent number of people by the time I left. I also got the salt and pepper squid, which was crisp and golden, but a little lacking in flavor: I would have appreciated a bit more salt, and perhaps some hot peppers, as I've had with the dish elsewhere. The server was lovely, and catered equally nicely to a variety of tables: one of visitors from Shanghai looking for a taste of home, a family who seemed unfamiliar with the menu and requested Western utensils, and my table of one. I would absolutely come again next time I'm in Rockville.Side note: No star deduction because you don't come here for the toilet, but the ladies' room was pretty gross. A thorough clean, a fresh coat of paint and perhaps new tile is in order!
By far the best Chinese restaurant in DMV. Their XLBs are incredible and other dumpling dishes are great too. Dan dan noodle and fried rice were also delicious. I don’t think I ever had any bad food from here. They don’t accept any credit cards and really busy during the weekend dinner time. Highly recommended!
Food tasted amazing never had authentic Chinese dishes before this place is definitely my go to I’ve been going everyday since my first time extremely they’re quick and everyone is very respectful what more can I say
The soup dumplings were kinda dry and rough on the outside. The flavor was pretty good but they definitely aren’t worth the hype. Several of the staff lacked basic manners. The bill for my friend and I came out to a $49.59 and the employee wouldn’t let us split the bill because there was a “$50 minimum” to split the bill. I understand that she’s not the one that created the rules, but she should have offered a bit of leniency given that we were only a few cents under.
This place has my favorite best flavored fried rice around. I had so many foods here and they were all delicious. The downside is how oily the food is here. The shrimp toast which was just drenched in oil, it took me 3 paper towels to suck up the oil from one piece. The dumpling were also so oily that it made me feel sick. While this is a yummy place to eat, it is definitely the greasiest Chinese food around, so if you have a sensitivity to this, I do not recommended this place.
My favorite place in DMV for soup dumplings!! While they are all good, my favorite one is the Crab and Pork XLB Soup Dumplings. Spicy “Cheng-Du” Chicken and the Spicy Wontons are delicious as well. Service is great and food comes out relatively fast, minus the soup dumplings, those take a bit of time. This place is always packed!
I’ve heard a lot of positive feedback about Bob’s and since I was in the area one weekday, decided to give it a try for lunch. I got there close to 1PM and they were packed, but I was still able to grab a seat. The first thing they did was bring me a pot of tea, without me asking! (BTW – It was really nice!) They gave three menus, the largest one was actually a laminated order form for dim sum, as well as all other entrées, appetizers, etc. I was fortunate to have a seat near where my server was standing at a station, as he was talkative with me, which was great! He explained the menu, let me modify entrées and gave me a sample too. I started with the Taiwanese Cucumbers – They smelled spot-on! They looked great, nice and fresh and they definitely tasted fresh too. The flavors of sesame oil were bright and good, but otherwise, it needed more zing… A little salt would’ve been nice (which I realize is tough to do with cucumbers, but perhaps they could sprinkle some sea salt upon plating). It also needed some heat, there were peppers in it, but they were bland and boring. The next dish was their Longhorn Pepper & Beef… This was perfectly presented and tasted pretty good. I loved the taste (and smell) of the flame-kissed wok’ing… AWESOME! The peppers were definitely present in this dish, but still mild to me, with the occasional hot one shining through. I liked this dish, but didn’t love it and doubt I’d order it again. So, I knew I was planning on taking something home and since I love cumin done Szechuan style, I saw they had cumin lamb… I wasn’t in the mood for “gamey” and I wasn’t aware of how they handle gamey meat, I preferred to stick with base flavors I knew and asked if they would make it with beef instead and he instantly said “yes!” Now, this was what I expected with a “cumin style” Chinese dish… Loaded with heat, lots of hi-heat wok’d onions and peppers, which help break them down to a mild, very flavorful state and the meat was tasty. But some of the meat was a little stringy…. Perhaps I should’ve stuck with lamb? All food items I ordered came out lightening fast, so if you’re limited on time, you shouldn’t have a problem eating here! The staff was friendly and they even offer a 10% discount if you pay ca$h!!! (I need to remember to bring enough cash next time!) The place was clean, orderly and nicely decorated, but seriously, I was there to enjoy some good, authentic Chinese eats and they pretty much accommodated… Not the best I’ve had to date (that would be Sichuan House in San Antonio, with a very close second being Szechuan Taste in Dale City), but this is VERY NICELY done and had I never had these others and had I never learned to wok myself, I would consider Bob’s to be perfect. Oh, one last thing… I asked my server about the Soy Sauce Marinated Jalapeño Peppers and he offered me a sample – AWESOME!!! He explained them as being fermented, like kimchi and I’m not really a fan of kimchi, but I loved these and they were spicy!!! The garlic in them really added a nice spike to the flavor. Overall… On this trip I admittingly did try familiar items, but if I come back, which I’d like to do… I’ll try more unique specialties to see how they are and hopefully broaden my Chinese palate.
First time trying out this restaurant and it’s wonderful! The noodle has a great taste to it and it was soft to chew. The vegetable dumplings was flavorful, and the pork bun had a great consistency of soup when you bite into it. The delivery came rather quick too!
