French toast!!!
Some great selections from a limited menu but they really need a sommelier. The wine list is really basic at best. If you like champagne you’ll be in hell.
Visited last night for our Goddaughter’s Birthday. The service was good. My goddaughter ordered a fish dish. The waitress never told her it was a whole fish with the head. So far, reaction by my gd was ok. Then, she had to proceed to cut the fish herself in order to eat it. Still, kind of ok. Apparently, her barramundi was filled with tiny bones which is natural but she should have been told what to expect. She had to work through the fish in order to eat it. In the end, she was left with about 1/2 to 3/4 cup of fish with a couple of bites of seaweed. In my case, I had a bouillabaisse which was tasty. I had a sliver of lobster tail that I could not get out of the shell because it was undercooked ( I’m a lifetime Mainer so don’t argue with me here). I was left with about one forkful of lobster. The hake also was left with skin on it that was difficult to remove leaving chunks of fish adhered to the skin which I discarded. My portion was just acceptable. A portion of my husband’s duck was medium rare which he not prefer. No one asked him how he wanted it cooked. My husband was asked upon making the reservation if it was a special occasion and he wrote them that it was our goddaughter’s birthday. It was not acknowledged in any way. Not that we expected anything but why ask. I was very disappointed especially at these prices and will not return. Upon making the reservation, my husband

We chose to visit Union as we wanted a fine dining experience to celebrate our wedding anniversary with our daughter. The evening began well with complimentary glasses of Prosecco, but then went downhill. We were surprised to be told that their menu consisted mainly of sharing plates , but didn’t fancy that so opted for the items that were “boxed” on the menu , to show that they were main plates, not for sharing. Two of us ordered oysters as a starter, the other ordered croquettes. The oysters came promptly, and were OK, without being great, the croquettes didn’t. Eventually, after enquiring as to their whereabouts, the croquettes arrived…and were cold and tasteless. This was followed by a house salad , ordered by one of us, and then another long gap before the bouillabaisse appeared…and was cold. We have tried this dishes in many different countries before and this one was definitely the worst, cold , unappetising and definitely overpriced. I am sure the staff at the Union are capable of supply good food, but failed completely to do so on this occasion; the were guilty of putting style before substance .
Sat at bar with Jordan. Great bartender with a wealth of knowledge and experience
Had both breakfast and dinner at the UNION. Both were top notch. Farm to table concept really works well here. Food was exceptional. Dinner recommendations include cauliflower tempura with kimchi - outstanding, salads - large and very fresh with great dressing, brioche buns with crab butter, salmon, chicken. All worth mentioning and ordering. Breakfast also outstanding. Service could not have been better at all meals.
This past weekend my wife and I decided to stay at the Press hotel and have dinner at their hotel restaurant Union. What a terrible experience. We sit down and ordered drinks and My wife ordered a mocktail that was tasty, I tried to order a special off their menu and was told they had run out of the ingredients, so ok I'll order a gin & tonic. Boy was the most watered down drink ever. Ok let's order dinner. I saw that they had a pan roasted Caldwell beef steak and decided to order it tonite. The waitress told me that it was a New York cut tonite. That's not my favorite cut but let's try it. The meal came and immediately I noticed the fat cap being 1/4 the thickness of the meat which was maybe 3 inches wide. They had sliced it and served it that way so I decided to try it and yes it was a perfect medium rare, but running through every piece was a line of gristle. Who serves it that way? Also it was supposed to be served with fingerling potatoes and turnips. The turnips were hard as rocks as they were undercooked and there were 3 slivers of potato on my plate. And they had the gall to charge $49 for that meal? Never again..."
Was looking for breakfast on a Sunday morning, the first restaurant we went to posted it was open, luckily for us, they decided not to be there. My wife and I like to walk, and we walked to the next closest place. The Union in The Press Hotel. AMAZING. We had no reservation, but they were able to sit us at the bar, the bartender was the best. Made me my iced decaf from scratch. Food was incredible. Atmosphere was to, highly recommend The Union. We will be back.
