If the presentation of the food isn't enough, the flavor will knock it out of the park for you. The atmosphere is very welcoming and comfortable. Menu selection can be overwhelming, but speaks to their wide variety of cuisine. 10/10 service, food, drinks and cleanliness. If sushi is your taste, please don't miss out on this gem!
OMG! I can't say enough positive things about this restaurant. This is the best sushi that I have ever had in my life - and I'm not a youngster. I had the seafood soup for an appetizer and it was just perfect - so delicious! What I wanted (Chef's Choice Sushi) was not on the menu so I simply asked for it. In return, I was rewarded with eight pieces of, as I have already said, the most delicious sushi I have ever had in my life. I thanked the chefs multiple times before leaving. I highly recommend this restaurant, and if you let the chef decide you will not be disappointed. The prices are more than reasonable for the high quality of food. I was immensely satisfied.
I love Benkay. We took guests here from out of town and it did not disappoint! My kids love here too! They gave us extra ice cream after our delicious meals too! Cannot recommend enough!
I too have had sushi all around the world and I have found Benkay to be consistently the best in Portland. I have tried them all around town and then some - fish is ALWAYS fresh and rarely has their been a missed note at the Middle St. location. I eat here 1 or 2x times a week and I wouldn't bother to spend that amount of money if this place were not up to grade.
So fresh and delicious, great service.
Looking for grocery store quality sushi that's super cheap, stay away!Been to Japan or appreciate exceptional food, come on in! My mother in law grew up in Osaka and I wish I could have taken a recording of her conversation. Let's just say she gave it her highest compliments.I lived in Okinawa, an island south of Japan, for three years and I agree that it's top-notch. I live in Boston now and it's comparable with the best there. And If I'm being honest I'd say it's better. It may not have the 20 course menu of O Ya but what they do have is just as good and fresh.
I left here tonight very upset and will not be returning to this location. I have been to your location on Congress street many times and they weren't open tonight so I thought let’s go to there other location. The prices were absolutely outrageous and I left leaving there paying $35 for a Mai tai bowl. I have been to Congress street location and have paid $12 for the same bowl. Both restaurants are owned by the same people so why not keep everything the same. The waitress was also extremely rude. It was a women I’ve never seen there before.
50% more expensive than nearly any other sushi joint in town with nothing particularly authentic to offer. We got takeout 4 rolls 2 soups 75 dollars before tip, the tempura was soggy, the crab rolls were not eaten because they tasted off. Definitely recommend going to King of the Roll or Yosaku before coming here.
Service was adequate. The food was good but not great. For an oceanside city with lots of local fishing the fish wasn't quite as fresh as I would expect. The prices were also surprisingly high and servings disappointingly small. It's difficult to have a satisfying meal for less than $40 per person without drinks. While there's nothing wrong with the food or service, they also weren't in line with the pricing.
Way overrated. Ordered "sushi deluxe" and a seaweed salad. As the main roll in the deluxe, Chef gave me a tuna fish roll, not a tuna roll, more like a tuna fish sandwich roll, with mayo. I could make a tuna fish sandwich if I wanted one. Just open a tin from my pantry and imagine the taste. Thought I was ordering sushi, not a deli sandwich. Pretty gross and very expensive for the quality. Also, $10 more than their website stated. Don't mind paying for quality sushi but come on.
