The best banh mi sandwich I’ve ever had. I got the tofu and the their sweet chili sauce made the sandwich. I also got the Thai green tea and appreciate that they had a dairy free option. Really reasonably priced and fast service.
Best banh mi I’ve had had on the East Coast. Coming from the OC with a huge Viet population and currently residing in the Boston area in close proximity to Boston Little Saigon, this is a gem of a place. Great flaky bread, delicious ingredients, and the mayo was too good. Can’t wait for my next trip back to Portland!
I've been going to Banh Appetit at every opportunity since discovering them a few months ago. They have excellent Banh Mi, of course, but the whole menu is good. Every entree has been really great, and the drinks are delicious, too.The only thing that didn't knock my socks off were the egg rolls.
Being from Houston we have a huge Vietnamese population with amazing food. With that being said, Banh Appetite is hands down one of the best places to go for a delicious banh mi. The BBQ pork was amazing and the bread was soft and crispy, the pickled onions and carrots was prefect. Will definitely be back again and again.
She's not much to look at, a small unassuming store front on a neighborhood street. Inside you'd be forgiven if you changed your mind and left before ordering. The menu is fairly limited; the same few flavor profiles are available in a variety of ways (Rice Noodle Bowls; Sandwiches, or Dumplings), and the small counter area is crowded with a couple of tables which are marked as not for use (a hold over from the Ronapocalypse). You order at the counter (or better yet, order ahead to avoid a 20 minute wait) and the food comes out from the kitchen in the back where it is lovingly packaged into take out containers and bags. We (foolishly) had not called ahead so we waited and got to enjoy the dance between kitchen and counter for 20 minutes and it was evident that the 2 people who were running everything were as precise and efficient as a Swiss Watch. We took our food to a nearby park, tormented in route by the smells from the bag. When we opened them and dug in we were thrilled, the flavor profiles were spot on for some of the best Vietnamese cuisine we've ever had, and the protein portions were clearly sized for American sensibilities (large and heavy). The Noodle Bowls (I believe they called them salads) were solid and could have easily satisfied any two normal appetites. We would have scaled back our order had we known. Still 4 entrees, and 4 drinks, plus tax and a tip and we still walked out for $70 which is not bad for the amount of food we got, and easily could have been cut in half if budget was an issue for us. This little gem will be limited only by their ambitions, they can easily expand to a larger location if they wanted.
Delicious slice of vietnames flavor in portland. If you have been to Lee's in California you will not be disappointed.
I went to Banh Appetit a couple days ago for Portland Food Fights to try out the beef lemongrass banh mi. The sandwich was phenomenal! Every ingredient was proportioned amazingly. Will be returning and recommending to everyone!
Love it. I wish I lived closer. I got the pork BBQ and lemongrass chicken. I've traveled to Vietnam and these are legit. I personally like a fried egg on my bahn mi so I did ask to add it to each. Not only are these exceptional sandwiches, but the staff is so nice and they are priced right. I'd eat here once a day if I were not a 2 hour drive away. Great job.
This was my 1st time there and won't be my last! The food was amazing!! I wish I would have got seconds or 3rd for leftovers! Definitely will be back!
Dropped in as I live in Portsmouth and was craving a bahn mi sandwich. I'd heard about this place and finally got here and so glad I did. It's a very unassuming and simple shop. Got to speak some with the owner's daughter about the Vietnamese community in the area and she was very pleasant to tell me a bit about Portland and her goals. So weird how simple conversations are a bit treasured with the lack of contact these days. Looking forward to going back and trying the pho!
