Once back in Kentucky, Fat Man Reviews made a stop into Joella's Hot Chicken Hamburg in Lexington, KY. Joella's serves Nashville hot chicken and southern sides in 17 locations throughout 5 states. I tried the Jumbo Tenders, grilled, with green beans, greens, hot honey sauce, Jo Jo sauce and BBQ Cheerwine sauce. The green beans and greens were cooked well but they both entirely lacked seasoning. The chicken was juicy and tender but, it could use a little seasoning as well. The Cheerwine has a nice hickory flavor, but it is not overly sweet. The JoJo sauce is very similar to Chick-fil-A sauce, but it is a little thicker with slightly more mustard. It was my favorite. The hot honey is very sweet with a delightful heat finish, but it is very thin as well. My fiancé had the Jumbo Tenders, fried, in Ella's favorite sauce with fries and Bama white sauce. The chicken was cooked well and crispy. Ella's favorite sauce is a well flavored sauce with a touch of heat on the back end. The Bama dipping sauce is money, it is creamy with great horseradish flavor. The fries were a little soggy, but the Parmesan cheese added a nice touch. Joella's has several chicken plate selections with varying heat levels. They also serve vegan dishes and beer. It is counter service, but everyone was pleasant. The Fat Man says the Joella’s Hot Chicken - Hamburg is Fat Man Approved with 1 chin.
Very good food, but the prices are too high for what you get! I got a 3 piece chicken tender with Mac and cheese, no drink. It was over $11. That's just too high. Very good food but I won't go back here with prices this high. It was over $8 for a 2 piece. Just a little too much in my opinion. And let me remind you again, that was with no drink!
We love this place, excellent service and delicious chicken.
Great experience and food tonight. The order taker was super friendly and explained answers to our questions perfectly. The food came to our table within minutes and the chicken was very hot and juicy. The place was clean and the price very fair. We will return soon.

Enjoyed this restaurant on a regular basis since they opened. Noticed that chicken portions have gotten smaller recently. Started out being around a $10 meal and last time I visited it was $17.50 for 3 chicken fingers, 2 sides and a drink. My last and final time at this place I ordered the “HOT” and it came with zero spice all for $17.50. They have priced me out of their food. I can go down the road at Suggins and eat for $10-12, amongst many other places. They have became a little too proud of their food it seems. I won’t be back.
Today is Thursday and my tastebuds are doing the happy dance.. and it’s all thanks to Joella’s . I came here for lunch and as I gazed at the menu- only one thing caught my eye… Wings. If any chicken joint has to be rated then wings should set the tone. Come on man, are you really a chicken shop of wonders or do you crush dreams? Joella’s is awesome. The food is fresh and tasty. The sauces only complemented the wings and the pies in a jar are oh so yummy. Service was quick and the overall establishment including bathrooms are cleaner than most. If you’re looking to get your grub on and join the tastebud conga line. Then you’re car should already be running with you in it and turning into the lot that contains the chicken that’s kicking!!!! I will be back!!!
Staff was super friendly, food was delicious and fast.
Best service ever! The collard greens were on point & the chicken was amazing!
First of all, I've eaten here about 2x a month for the past year, and the food is consistently pretty good- the chicken is crispy and the breading is flavorful, and the sides are seasoned well. However, the Hot chicken was decently spicy when I first tried it, and now it's disappointingly mild. (I have gotten Fire in da Hole since, but I wish there were an option between mild and melt-your-face-off hot). And the crispy-thin fries used to be unique and excellent because of their thin cut and pepper, but recently they've been cut/flavor wise indistinguishable from McDonald's so I probably won't get them anymore. Good place, but not as great as it used to be.
