Didn't realize that it was in a gas station when we found it when looking for food here on maps and were apprehensive about rating here when we arrived but so glad we did. Mac and cheese was wonderful, sandwiches were great. Only thing that wasn't awesome was the sauce.
The food had good flavor. The bad was it's portions were menial. Especially for the price. I might give them another shot.

Food was great and came out super quick. The atmosphere was super cool and unlike any I’ve really seen. It was also pretty nifty we could get good food, gas, and ice all in one store. Glad we made the stop when traveling for a dog show!
I do not know Mr. James however I do know that his employees know how to cook a burger. They served me the most delicious burger I have had in years. The way it slid down my throat into my waiting stomach and filled my gullet with delicious delight...simply magnificent.
Best barbecue on earth I drive from topeka as often as I can to go up to Stanley James. It's just that good.
The brisket was really good. Enjoyed my burger, but was disappointed in the sides offered. My husbandloved the baked beans, but I found the mac and cheese I had more of a buttered mac as it didn't taste of cheese at all to me. It was good, just not what I wanted from mac and cheese. That said I find almost all mac and cheese wanting. My in-laws love this place and they really like the mac and cheese.
Awesome meat. Lovely casual atmosphere. Delicious sides. The sauce is the problem. The sweet has too much molasses and too much tomato. The spicy is better but same problem. The regular is also bad. More brown sugar is the need I think. And perhaps more vinegar and mustard. Great food but unfortunately the sauce really ruined it.

We were pleasantly surprised passing thru Lawrence, Kansas today when we stopped at Stanley James Smokehouse for a quick bite! I got the burnt ends sandwich and my husband got the brisket sandwich. I can honestly say that the burnt ends were really the best I've had...and we've eaten at Jack Stack and Snead's. My husband said the brisket was lean and tender as well. SJ Smokehouse is worth the stop. Eat in (if there's room) or pick up on the way home. Service was quick, and the place is clean. I only wish there's was one in out neck of the woods! :O)
