Great coffee shop and fishing outfitter. Went there with my wife and baby. Everyone was inviting and helpful. The coffee is fresh and made to order. One of the best selections of unique fly lures in Kansas. Very knowledgeable staff with regards to fishing and outdoor outfitting in general. Will return soon.
This place brings such a unique business concept to Lawrence, a cafe + fly fishing shop! Who would have thought? I know some of these recent reviews address the staff not being able to take tips. If you look at the updated menu/their retail collection you'll note that prices have changed to reflect management being able to provide a livable wage to their employees. Just a friendly FYI :)
I work just down the street, so I come and get my coffee at this place almost every morning, and the coffee is really good. I don’t care much for the shop because I’m obviously no fisherman, but the employees are always super friendly and the coffee is always fantastic. However, I came in recently and was told that the employees CAN NO LONGER ACCEPT TIPS. What kind of coffee shop or restaurant does that? Certainly not an ethical one. On top of that, my coworkers and I noticed that the staff has almost been entirely replaced. I’ve worked in the restaurant industry long enough to know that some shady business practices are going on here, which is disappointing because I really loved this place.
Love, love, love this place! The coffee is fantastic (Messenger coffee, no less!), the vibe is perfect, and the employees are friendly and helpful. I'm not a fisher myself, but this water-lover has found a new favorite shop and I can't wait to see what spring brings!
As a fly fisherman it is great to have a place locally to pick up some essentials, tying materials, and specialty flies. The staff is always very friendly and ask what else I would like to see them carry from a fishing perspective.Also, my wife LOVES their coffee! It’s a win win!

Coffee is good and shop is cute, which is a shame, because apparently the owners are firing employees for organizing after the owners took away tips. Have already complained to the staff many times about tips being taken away but seems like they, too, were complaining too much for the owner’s liking, because the staff is entirely new. Yikes. Not a good look for this store. Also, they aren’t even local apparently.
Management is bad, coffee drinks are bad. You can tell that the baristas weren’t trained / don’t really know what’s up. Which would be fine if the drinks weren’t so expensive (along with the fishing gear). Honestly, as a former Lawrence resident who feels very strongly about keeping Mass Street friendly and vibrant, this place ain’t it.
The employees were the good part of coming here. Then the owners fire employees for organizing for their rights, took tips away, fired staff unwilling to perform tasks outside of their role, and then increased prices. Their actions don't align with their advertised ethos.
