Wow, what's happened? Ridiculously expensive, completely mediocre food. My siblings and I rolled into town and were so exicted to relive the old times at...ah...Maxies. What a letdown. Salad stylings from 1975, the worst prime rib I've ever had (+$30, too!), and just...uninspired food, service and decor. We all three just looked at each other and shook our heads. And the writing is on the wall, literally. "Best XXX in Des Moines" certificates on the wall...from 10 or more years ago. An old favorite gone. It feels like the "before" from one of those Gordon Ramsey Kitchen Nightmare episodes. Hard miss from me until they start to rethink their restaurant.
Is Maxie's under new ownership? It has really declined. The quality of the food has declined, prices skyrocketed, and service is now very slow. When I paid there was an issue at the register and my credit card was laid out in front of another customer numbers-up literally inches from his face - thanks for protecting my credit card info ? We've been coming here for years, but we're over it now.
First things first: famous fried onion... things? Huge pass. They're not onion rings, its a jumble of crispy small onion peices. If I want fried onions I'll get French's, they taste the same.Buffalo wings were quite good, they were crispy and the meat was juicy but it was not buffalo-y enough for my Buffalo sauce drinking husband. I liked them tho a+Maxie burger? Average, it was a fine, plain no fuss no character run of the mill burger. Slightly pink in the middle (we asked for medium) and just, was. It was a burger that was.Food was kinda slow to come out but our server was plenty nice. The atmosphere is very dated. Theres an antique mall across the way and Maxies felt older. Dusty plastic flower vibes.

Great little gem in West Des Moines! Can't believe we've never been here! Food was great, service was great, just needs a little update inside ? But we will visit again for sure! Oh, and they really do have the best onion rings as they say!
$48 for two hamburgers and fries? They were fine, but 4x better than Big Mac's?Meh.
Food was delicious, well cooked, well portioned. However service left something to be desired. I understand it's a laid back kind of place, but didn't exactly feel welcome at all. Also send to just have one server on the floor, she was very sweet and did her best to hustle... the circumstances simply did not set her up for success.
I ordered a maxieburger and fries. My husband picked it up. It arrived cold and appeared to have been thrown on the floor. The cheese sauce looked like chunky paste. It’s in the garbage can. We have come to the restaurant thousands of times and I’ve never had a meal this bad.I should have taken a picture. Unappetizing mess
Steak DeBurgo was good, Chicken Alfredo was very watery with almost no flavor at all.
