Higher Ground Cafe is clean and airy with high ceilings, fresh air and giant wall-to-wall windows which is pleasant. Both lattes that my husband and I received were lukewarm, watery, and tasted a bit like chocolate milk? The pound cake was also stale, the dry frosting breaking into pieces like a day old pastry, though not marked as such. I live an hour away from Iowa City, don't consume more that one cup of coffee per day, and only order it out as a rare treat. Have thoroughly enjoyed the downtown Java House when visiting Iowa City for over 30 years, and will head back there now for a consolation cup.
This is just the best coffee shop in IC. The coffee is great (tons of different options too), everything is fairly priced, the music is always good, and every employee is considerate and patient.
stopped here on a cross country road trip. good coffee. they offer vegan and gluten free pastries — although not the best tasting, definitely nice to have the options. the atmosphere is very good, would definitely study here
I had the BLAT on whole wheat toast. It was delicious. My husband had the Weggie sandwich on whole wheat toast and it was also delicious. Bright, open, beautiful cafe.
This coffee shop offers an extensive menu of pour-over drinks as well as the usual coffee shop offerings. I had a couple of their coffee items and a breakfast sandwich. they were all very good. I will look to return for more on future visits to Iowa City.
Best staff in all of Iowa City! Hired them to serve at our wedding and couldn’t have been happier! The owner, Ben, was extremely easy to communicate with and helped tremendously with any hiccups. Would definitely recommend them to anyone looking to do the same! Check out how friendly the high ground staff is next time you’re downtown for a drink!

favorite place to go & do homework, lovely quiet warm working environment and reallyyyyy good pastries (well priced, too!) staff is super cool
