The design, experience and food/drink is excellent.I’m confused by why the staff appears to have walked off the set of Little House on the Prairie. On multiple occasions I’ve visited and the staff comprised of young women in their early 20s are wearing full dresses designed in the 1800s and doilies on their heads.That plus the not subtle religious decorations and books have me wondering what kind of sect is operating here.One that knows how to operate an excellent cafe, but still.
So FREAKING good! Highly recommend the pretzel with cheese (especially when it comes fresh out of the oven, it makes your eyes roll back) mmm mmm mmmmmmm! The flavors are melting on my tongue! Also the dirty Chai latte…SPECTACULAR. The best in town. Maybe the world. Also also I’ve never a moist scone….until now! The chocolate espresso…I like it, Picasso ? the cinnamon rolls…to DIE for ?
Encounter is my go to place for both food and coffee! They are the best cafe in Iowa City. Not only will your tummy be happy after stopping here, the employees are the kindest individuals ever and is what really makes them stand out. Several times I have witnessed them handle individuals with disabilities with patience and kindness. Often times encounter is busy, but it is always worth it. I would recommend it to everyone.

Best coffee in the area. I always get a caramel macchiato when I try a new coffee shop and this did not disappoint. Good breakfast, good lunch, could stay in there all day.
Lovely place. Quaint and delicious!! Really enjoyed the skillet breakfast and later returned for their home made pretzels. Yum!!
Delicious, cute mocha and the skillet scramble was very tasty. Biscuits and gravy a little bland, but very nice atmosphere. I will go back!
