I brought my brother here for his birthday and his 1st time having sushi. What a great choice! Our server, Rocio, ensured we had the best experience. The sushi was very reasonably priced and great quality. The menu is extensive and even picky eaters will be able to find something here. Definitely worth the drive.
When searching for a sushi place in IC, we hesitated to come here even though it was closest because it was lower rated than others. I'm not sure how or why! We ordered 7 or 8 sushi rolls ranging from the $5 California roll to the $15 special rolls. All were delicious. They have much more of a selection for cheaper, less elaborate rolls than I've seen at other places, and the ones we tried were great. We were seated immediately and had our food within 30 minutes. We will definitely visit again when we are in the area!
Great atmosphere, service and food. It is priced reasonably and a good place to grab sushi while downtown.
I went last night with a friend and I maybe would’ve enjoyed the food if I hadn’t heard some man (I believe the manager? Store owner??) yelling at one of his servers. I’ve had a great experience with the servers so you can imagine my surprise. It was entirely unprofessional and interrupted what would’ve been a nice night. I just didn’t feel right eating after hearing the way this man treated his employees so my friend and I left after. Sumo do better, babe.
I was extremely disappointed by my experience at Sumo tonight. Unfortunately dinner was very rudely interrupted by screaming. I am unsure of the man’s exact position but I imagine he is a manager and the young female involved in the situation seemed to be an employee. Those of us dining in were forced to listen to him scream profanities at this poor girl for what felt like forever. It was truly one of the most disgusting things I have ever witnessed in a restaurant. I have worked at numerous restaurants for many years and I have NEVER seen an interaction quite as awful as this. No matter what the disagreement was I did not see the point in him humiliating her in front of an entire restaurant. The poor girl left sobbing and I decided to leave as soon as possible. I will definitely not be returning if this is how Sumo treats its employees. I hope the girl is doing okay, what occurred tonight was beyond unacceptable.
If you are going to be a manager of a restaurant filled with college students, the absolute bare minimum you could do is give them a discount on the food. If you are going to be a manager of a restaurant, treat your employees with the dignity and respect they deserve; they are the reason why you have your job and why you are able to keep your job. The manager at this place is an extremely insecure man who should not hold a place of leadership. People will not want to come to a restaurant that doesn’t treat its workers well and has a manager that screams no matter who is listening. To management reading this, if you have recently yelled at your employees to the point where they quit, get some therapy and reevaluate yourself as a person because you are doing a terrible job. Thank you ?
Hands down my favorite sushi restaurant in iowa city. Great deals, fast service, and delicious food! Always a reliable option that I like to show my friends.
After a miserable experience of not getting served at a sushi house that’s in close proximity to Sumo sushi. My wife and I ended up wandering over here for dinner, and we are really glad we did. The sushi was fresh and delicious. The drinks and cocktails were top notch and the wait staff was friendly and quick. I will absolutely be going be to Sumo again.
Absolutely amazing food. Incredibly affordable as well. As an out of towner, it was awesome to try some place new and Sumo did not disappoint.
I had Pho and it was delicious. Nice atmosphere and good service.
