This was a really nice place for a hotel restaurant. Excellent dirty martinis and strawberry mojitos. We were lead astray by the salmon cakes, though, as the video for the restaurant pictured two, and we only got one...and it was $14. Granted it was a large salmon cake, but still, that's a tad high for less than 4 ounces of salmon. The dinner rolls were not fresh and kind of hard and the attempt at making the butter presented as upscale was a big miss when we tasted the lavender sprinkled on top. Not sure if salted lavender is a thing? The saving grace was the paradise salad. It was enormous for $10, fed both of us plenty with some to take back for lunch the next day.Not sure we'll be back, but our server was quite sweet and did an excellent job.

Thought we’d brighten a gloomy day with a nice lunch at Caroline’s… we hadn’t been there in quite some time. … The restaurant was far from overly busy, but took a good 10 minutes of waiting for someone to appear and seat us…at a rather dirty, nicked up table. We ordered fish tacos and a chicken wrap. The chicken wrap appeared but the fish taco order got screwed up and fish and chips arrived instead. The waitress took it back and while we waited for the fish tacos to materialize my wrap was cold before it showed up. Who wants to eat alone on a lunch date? The hostess apologized and “threw her fellow waitress under the bus” for the order mistake. Another nice touch. Finally eating, the food was a horrible disappointment! We both tried one of the fish tacos and left the rest sit - what a waste of time and energy that was. Tasted like nothing. Chicken wrap had no taste either- left most of that sit too. Shared our disappointment politely with the waitress and her excuse for the 3rd time was that they were short staffed. …. So did that mean that the janitor made our lunch?? We’d had breakfast there before and it was good, but Caroline’s won’t ever be on our short list again. Is anyone on staff actually tasting the food there as a mystery customer? They might want to.

The food was good, but the service was lackluster. When we walked in, the waitress rolled her eyes and then waited several minutes before coming over to seat us. She never stopped by to check on our food after it was delivered. Then proceeded to drop off the bill when we were barely half way through our breakfast, and didn't even land a pen for me to sign the credit card slip. I had to ask another waitress to borrow a pen. I would understand a little more if they had been busy, but there were only 3 tables dining (including us).

Caroline’s was a pleasant surprise. Housed on the lower level of the prestigious Hotel Julien in downtown Dubuque, this restaurant has a terrific dinner menu. I decided to have a light dinner and chose the restaurant’s signature White Bean Chicken Chili and Paradise Salad. The chili was creamy with a subtle heat and outstanding flavor. I enjoyed the salad, which was copiously sized and served with warm rolls and whipped butter. Truly a treat.

Service was good and the food was too! Sunday morning and we were able to be seated promptly. Friendly waitress (Jen) and efficient! Thanks for a great breakfast!

We are from the area and own a business in the hospitality industry so decided to go in for a Thursday evening dinner. We started in the lounge and had a couple of drinks before dinner. Bartender was great to chat. Unfortunately that is where the good experience ended, Went over to Caroline's and was seated by a younger guy who proceeded to run his hands through his hair as he was seating us and handing us our menus. We later watched him walking through the dining room continuing to run his hand through his hair multiple times and then observed him setting clean plates on a table. I'm going to assume no hand washing was done prior. If your hair is that long and you feel the need to constantly touch it to keep it off your face then perhaps a hair cut of a job in a different industry. Now onto the meal.We ordered the cheese and charcuterie plate to start. What we received was deli cut meat and cheese with some berries and walnuts. The meat and cheese were all about 1/8" thick and we received a total of 1 and a half slices of salami and capicola, 3/4 of a slice of mortadella, 1 and a half slices each of yellow cheddar and white cheddar (I think) and a dollop of goat. A few blueberries (which a few were starting to mold), some dried cranberries and walnuts with some toast points.Cost was $19 for a plate of deli meat/cheese that maybe cost $2 in total and with the berries and nuts, maybe $3 in total. Someone needs to tell the chef and management that deli meat/cheese is not charcuterie. It was a poor start and we were hoping things would get better with the main course.I ordered the Pork Belly Two Ways and my wife ordered the Blackened Chicken Pasta. Her meal was well done, no complaints I would give it a 4/5. However, mine was a different story. One would think that when a menu states 2 ways, that you would be receiving something that was being served prepared two separate ways as is commonly done. This was not the case. Apparently they first braised the belly and then sear it, so it arrives at the table basically a single preparation. They should change the menu description as it is deceiving. Being braised and then seared, it was somewhat dry for a braised belly, I would give it a 3/5. Brussel sprouts that accompanied were the highlight of the plate, and the polenta cake was uninspiring with no seasoning or flavor at all. For what the meal cost and the quality we received, we will not return. I would recommend Brazen or L'May instead if your in the area looking for a good meal.

Very pleasant wait staff and exceptional coffee. We had the “fish fry” (choose three entrees - we had battered cod, coconut shrimp and a soft shell crab). This restaurant was very drafty on a cold evening in early March so we were not comfortable. The food was not hot nor as flavorful as we would have expected - actually it was rather bland. The hush puppies were burned. We liked the tartar and spicy sauces, and the cole slaw. Our tab and tip for two was $60+. We did not have alcoholic beverages. The dinners were not special at all, something that would reasonably be expected in a hotel restaurant and at these prices, and in a town that knows how to prepare seafood during Lenten. We received a free apple dessert because were were staying in the Julien Hotel. The dessert was OK; nothing to write home about. This restaurant could be a contender if it would improve food preparation and make guests feel special.

My experience was great. I unknowingly came in right before they briefly close at 10:30 am, and they were very accommodating. My coffee and water were always full. The biscuits and gravy with browns and onions topped with two sunny up eggs was spot on and delicious as well as generously portioned. Best of all was my server, Jamie. She was terrific and had a to go cup of coffee in my hand before I was even fully prepared with my gear for the cold outside. Outstanding.
