When we walked in to this restaurant (which is in an old house) we weren’t sure we were in the right place so we wandered in where we were scolded and told to wait up front. The staff was rude minus the waitress who took over for us. She tried although when our order was messed up for all 3 of my daughters she blamed it on me ordering it wrong (I did not btw). The cook came out to make it right, but said “you won’t be back anyway” which really upset my husband. It was a bit expensive for what it is. The food was good ans the patio is lovely.
Just love this place. It had been years since my last visit. Better than ever.
The food was okay, but not authentic. Had quesadillas that were disappointing. The cherry on top was hearing the owner of the restaurant tell customers “No Mexicans come here, or want to work here so I don’t have to worry about illegals. We’re all legal here”. It’s upsetting to hear this comment from a white man owning a Mexican restaurant, and profiting off the culture.
Always my favorite Mexican restaurant. Haven't been here for a while since we now live so far away. When in town, this is a must for us.
Came here during the summer. Chips and salsa was tasty. Margarita pitchers were even better! Inside dining area was intimate but the outside ambience was perfect. Can't wait until it's warm again!
Worst restaurant EVER. The person that answers the phone is so rude, it’s truly unbelievable. He informed me he had been there for 54 years and basically hung up on me when I was trying to find out about an order I had placed to go. They advertise open until 9, this was at 7 and he said no one there so they cancelled my order. Next up, I thought I would try again, ordered an entree that is supposed to be non meat, and guess what? Everything is beef…what? They don’t have flan, which I thought was a fluke. But third order in, and no flan, why don’t they take it off the menu? Forget about this place. It may be the oldest Mexican restaurant in Des Moines, but it is truly awful in every which way.
What a nice place. The waitress who seated us was a little uncomfortable but the owner made the experience much more relaxing. The patio is top notch. Great vibe. Reallllllly good food! Watched a hummingbird moth have dinner on the flowers adorning the lofted deck we day on. Just perfect.
This was one of the worst restaurants I have ever ate at. I think a 12 year old could make a better taco and enchilada. My enchilada was just a flour tortilla with hyvee shredded cheese inside. The queso dip was white velveeta cheese with a pepper on top. I would never go back
The owner was drunk. The entire staff seemed to think I was invisible. Owner dropping f bombs, drunk, staggering throughout the business.
Atmosphere is great if you like something quaint and quirky. Patio is especially awesome with birds begging for store bought chips. Queso is yummy topped with tomatoes and green onions. Margaritas are on point! Food reminds me of 1970’s Tex Mex so if you are into nostalgia this is your place. If you are into authentic Mexican with a large menu stay away. Chili Rellano was great...the best I’ve had. Taco was sub par. Salsa was very understated and I asked them to make me something a little more spicy and they did.
