El Bait Shop is a non-negotiable stop every time we're in Des Moines. We love the atmosphere, the beer selection, and the location. We've always had great experiences here.This trip, we were seated in the same section as a LARGE party, all with separate checks, which I know was a factor in the service we experienced. The beer was cold and delicious, the food was great. But we had to ask our server several times for things like water, attention, our tab. I know it was a holiday weekend (Memorial Day) and we were in a section with a waitress also servicing a large party, but we really had to work to get the attention of our server for basic things. That said, once we ordered, the food came out quickly. The food was good. The beer was cold. The beer was wonderful. The atmosphere was and has always been fun. We will continue visiting El Bait Shop when we visit Des Moines.
I come here quite often and my experience is always the same. I come for the fried pickles, and about 7/10 times they are out of the pickles. Also expect to wait 10-20 minutes for a server to even acknowledge your existence. Not only that, also expect for a server to be annoyed with your existence. I am a waitress myself at one of the busiest biker bar/restaurants in Des Moines and I would never treat my customers as such. I get it can get chaotic, but like, come on. Do better bait shop. I’ve given you guys enough chances but I won’t be returning after this time.

Amazing selection of craft beer, with many of them being from local Des Moines breweries.From seltzers and ciders, sours to stouts, easy drinkers to barrel-aged monsters, there is literally something for everyone!Oh yeah - and great food! We shared a prime rib sandwich with sauteed onions, pepper jack cheese, and au jus with a side of sweet potato tots - tender, flavorful, with plenty of meat. Couldn't be better!Come enjoy some time at the El Bait Shop - you'll be glad you did!
What an awesome place right here in Des Moines! Super friendly staff roomy super comfortable atmosphere great food and tons and tons of beer on tap to select. I highly recommend this place if you’re in the area. The chicken fried steak taste like it was frozen and came from swans. But all the other stuff is great especially mom‘s pot roast!
Amazing place. 225 beers on tap from across the country, great food, you can’t find a better bar in Iowa or about anywhere.
I love this place! The aesthetic is your typical dive bar but the food and service has always been really good. I’d recommend the Velvet Elvis Dip (:
I stop here whenever I am in town. I am a sour beer fan and the Bait Shop doesn't disappoint, typically having at least 30 different sours on tap.
